This is a niche scenario, so I could not find much online about it.
Playing with Arcane Archer, I decided to grab the Martial Adept feat at 8th level. This allows me to choose two Battle Master Maneuvers, one of them being Precision Attack. I quickly realized that I'm unsure how it would work with Curving Shot.
Precision Attack When you make a weapon attack roll against a creature, you can expend one superiority die to add it to the roll. You can use this maneuver before or after making the attack roll, but before any effects of the attack are applied.
Curving Shot At 7th level, you learn how to direct an errant arrow toward a new target. When you make an attack roll with a magic arrow and miss, you can use a bonus action to reroll the attack roll against a different target within 60 feet of the original target.
Here's the scenario:
There are two Hobgoblins (AC 18), 20 ft apart.
Attack first Hobgoblin, I get 13 [(3)+10] so I miss.
I decide to spend a martial dice and use Precision Attack.
The d6 lands on a 4, totaling 17, still a miss.
I then decide to use Curving Shot to reroll and try to hit the second Hobgoblin.
I get 16 [(6)+10] so I miss again.
My question now is, since it is the same attack, does the Precision Attack from the initial roll still applies for the attack on the second Hobgoblin? And if yes, do I reroll the martial die too?
Well, there's a fair chance this is a spam thread given all this was apparently typed in 21 seconds, but the question is worth answering anyways. Whelp, nvm, my bad for jumping the gun on that front.
I'd call the Precision Attack a one-off effect. You made an attack roll and then rolled Precision Attack on top of it. It was still a miss, so you used Curving Shot, which tells you to make another attack roll. It says "reroll", but functionally I'd call the second roll a complete blank slate, so effects like Precision Attack don't carry over. You'd have to spend another Maneuver Die if you have one to apply Precision Attack again.
Not sure what is considered a spam thread in this forum, but I'm pretty sure did not type it in 21 seconds. I did create the account just to ask this question. I know the case is mainly DM interpretation, but I was wondering if there was something RAW about this.
From what I read online, if I was using something like the Halfling's Lucky/Bountiful Luck abilities instead of Curving Shot, I would reroll the attack against the first Hobgoblin and still add the original Precision Attack to it, keeping the original martial die roll. I was basically wondering if Curving Shot would work the same or not.
Apologies, sometimes there's bots that copy/paste the topic post from a Reddit thread, and then later edit a link to a malicious site in the post. A new account rapidly posting a single comment looks a lot like one.
