So the character I'm considering would begin with another class, but would multi-class into Wizard after first level. They would then take wizard levels for the rest of the way.
One problem: How do i get a Wizard's spellbook after level one? There's very little info on how much they cost.
Under 2014 rules, a spellbook had a value of 50 gp. You can use that as a base, or if your GM's not a stickler for pricing things, the "book" could be some sort of homemade improvisation with scavenged pieces of parchment tied to a wooden picture frame or something. Depends on what your GM says.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
If you're wondering how you get the book to record your spells at the first level, it just kind of pops into being- your spellcasting feature specifically says that at level 1 you have the book. If you want a spare, then if we look at the class starting equipment it still links to the Legacy spellbook item that's 50 gp, or your DM might go with you buying a blank book from the 2024 PHB for 25 gp. All of that assuming they're running off list prices rather than fiddling with them for one reason or another.
Presumably you get it as part of training to become a wizard.
Which directly raises an often-overlooked roleplaying point --- how, exactly, is your character going to become a wizard?
If your backstory is that you're a failed wizard apprentice, you might well have been carrying your unused spellbook all this time, and it was never mentioned because of reasons.
If you don't have any prior training to be a wizard, then your DM might well require you to spend some downtime to get your wizard level.

In short, talk to your DM.
Well, Sage background, High Elf species.... quite frankly, my level 1 fighter has more magic than most level 1 wizards already....
So basically you buy or are provided with a spellbook via the schooling you undergo to shift from fighter to mage. After that you either find one of the magic ones or you buy additional books then spend the cash to transcribe spell from your main one to your duplicates.
This is what the 24 rules say for the wizard: "Spellbook. Your wizardly apprenticeship culminated in the creation of a unique book: your spellbook. It is a Tiny object that weighs 3 pounds, contains 100 pages, and can be read only by you or someone casting Identify. You determine the book’s appearance and materials, such as a gilt-edged tome or a collection of vellum bound with twine.
The book contains the level 1+ spells you know. It starts with six level 1 Wizard spells of your choice.
Whenever you gain a Wizard level after 1, add two Wizard spells of your choice to your spellbook. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown in the Wizard Features table. The spells are the culmination of arcane research you do regularly."
So I think no cost is mentioned, because it completely depends of the appearance of the book. Which also mean any book can become you spellbook.

Thanks!
According to the Player's Handbook, a spellbook costs 50 gp. That said, making one yourself would probably a nice bit of character development.

I don't see that in the 2024 book.
As I said above, if you look at the starting gear for a Wizard it lists the Spellbook item linking to the 2014 entry.
