So I have some players asking if memory modification using a 9th level spell slot can wipe the stress experience of a wish spell from the 1/3 chance of neve being able to cast again.
I was inclined to offer a reroll with inversed odds 1/3 of it working. However am not sure if I should allow it at all. Thoughts?
The Wish stress from using the spell for reasons other than spell duplication does not appear to be a mental trauma effect;
The description indicates that there's a physical strain (Strength 3 for up to 2d4 days,) and some sort of potentially permanent magical backlash (for every spell cast before a Long Rest, 1d10 Necrotic damage per spell level, 33% chance of never being able to cast the spell again.)
As a result, I would rule that removing the memory of having undergone this stress would not remove the effects of having undergone the stress, any more than removing the memory of someone taking one of your kidneys removes the effects of having one fewer kidneys; or removing the memory of having contracted lycanthropy removes the effects. All the attendant issues are still there, you just no longer remember why.
I agree with notovny's interpretation, but I'll add that I think modifying someone's memory could definitely make them think they're capable of casting Wish again when they're not due to that effect, or vice versa, if for some reason that were valuable to you.

And if a Wizard or Sorcerer wanted to cast it again, that's why it's important to have good fellow adventurers to remind the party that the Wizard is getting older and needs their pill.

🎵I'm on top of the world, looking down on creation, wreaking death and devastation with my mind.
As the power that I've found erupts freely from the ground, I will cackle from the top of the world.🎵
