so a player in my game is a hexblade warlock and took the evocation maddening hex and it deals psychic damage to anything with in 5 feet from the hexed mark. so his question is dose psychic damage apply to undead. my ruling is if it has a brain it takes psychic damage no damage if it dose not have a brain. any one else encounter this and how do you deal with it?
It's your call as DM, but by the rules, if a creature is resistant or immune to a particular kind of damage, it will be spelled out in the creature's stat block.
As a GM you can alter monsters. Remember that if you add immunities you are adding CR to the monsters.
Personally when I played a Bard I greatlyenjoyed using Vicious Mockery and reeeaallly bad jokes. "Hey skeleton! You know why we're going to beat you? Because you don't have any guts!"
What said, don't think about it too much. 5E has cut down on Resistances and Immunities significantly. Skeletons are no longer resistant to slashing and piercing and instead vulnerable to blunt. They are no longer immune to cold, mind effecting, sleep, paralysis, stun, disease, death effects, and crits.
Some undead need to make a save when they drop to 0hp. on success they get back up to 1hp. only failing that save, or final hit being radiant damage will truly kill them. Could add something like that as well. That way Psychic Damage can still have a chance of killing blows, but definitely contribute to damage dealing in general.

There is a lot less book keeping.
