I have a dumb question. On my character sheet under my equipment my battleaxe shows damage dice as 1d8+3 but in parentheses next to it there is a 1d10+3 so my question is what is the 1d10+3.
Option A allows you to carry a shield while fighting, giving you a boost of defense while still dealing decent damage. But if you just want to go totally sickhouse on a fool you get the option of dropping the shield and getting both hands on that axe and start focusing on dealing damage.

True except for one caveat that it takes an Action to take off a shield. So... prepare accordingly if that is your plan.
Looking back, I realize I didn't actually answer the original question at all...
Okay, the two different damage dice are because a Battleaxe is considered a "Versatile" weapon, meaning you can choose to wield it either one-handed or two-handed. The d8 represents wielding it one-handed, and while you deal slightly less damage this way, it frees you up to carry objects in your other hand... usually a shield, which trades some damage output for increased defense. Alternatively, the d10 represents using both hands to swing the weapon, increasing its power but reducing your defense.
It can come up in other ways as well. For example, if you're climbing a rope you can still wield a versatile weapon with your free hand. But the most common reason you would hold your weapon one-handed or two is for a shield.
I'm having the issue that I can't switch back and forth- does anyone know what could be the problem, or if there's a specific screen you need to switch from?

What tool are you using?
Because if you were playing with just classic pen and paper it would be just a matter of picking up a d10 to roll instead of a d8.
If you are using DnDBeyond then if you have a Versatile weapon equipped it will list it as an attack in your Actions tab. There it will show your bonus to hit followed by two damage rolling methods, one on top of the other. The top one with the smaller damage die is what you click on to roll your one handed damage. The bottom one with the larger damage die is what you click on to roll your two hands damage.
If you don't see your weapon listed as an attack in the Actions tab then you don't have it equipped. Go to your Inventory tab and click on the box to the left of your weapon in the 'Active' column to equip it.
Also, be aware that DnDBeyond does not track how many free hand you have or if you already have armor donned. So it is trusting you to track what is feasible for your character to have equipped.
At the moment I can't get any rolls to happen in DnDBeyonds web browser character sheet, but the DnDBeyond app's UI is the same and it is working as expected.

A Battleaxe is a Versatile weapon.
When wielded in one hand the Battleaxe has a damage die of 1d8.
When wielded in two hands the Battleaxe has a damage die of 1d10.

Ah, that helped me figure it out- there was something wrong with my app. Thanks!
