So, I'm making a character for a new campaign, an Oath of the Ancients Paladin and I'm pretty excited to play him, and while creating him here on D&DB, (with homebrew content turned off), I found a background called "Ancient Inheritor" and it seems perfect for what I want.
Three skills I can select from a nice long list, two languages, and cool background feature where my character is the current inheritor of an ancient item, possibly magical, but definitely mythical and historically interesting. This sounds like a great story hook for the DM to have me carry a sword or something that I can grow into the use of, as I unveil it's secret history and learn to access it's power, attune to it, etc.
The only problem is the game has a strict "Only Homebrew content the DM has set aside for us in advance" rule and I can't find where this background came from, nor the parts of it if it was cobbled together from other backgrounds. It was in the D&DB character creator as if it were just a normal background, but all my searches on teh intarwebs have come up dry. I can't for the life of me figure out which of the many possible sources it could be from.
D&DB desperately needs a source of all content tag on various feats, backgrounds and so on.
If anyone can tell me where "Ancient Inheritor" is located, I'd greatly appreciate it, so I can get approval from my DM before Thursday morning.
Are you thinking of https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds/inheritor ? From SCAG, apparently. It's just called "Inheritor". It's not quite what you said - don't see that long a list of skills, and only one language, but the background feature matches your description.
The problem is I have various rulesbooks shared to me through the campaign via content sharing, so, I know this must be an official background from somewhere, but the website is doesn't really go out of it's way to help explain where from, exactly. Like I said, I specifically made the character with Homebrew content turned off.
As Swiftsign says, any official backgrounds you have access to will be listed on the backgrounds page, including stating which source they are from.
I guess there is a bug in D&DB then, since I specifically made sure to turn off homebrew when making the character. Darn it.
Thanks for your help, both of you.
Strangely, the background isn't anywhere in the list of homebrew backgrounds, either.
Where is it coming from?Beats the hell out of me!
Is it private homebrew created by someone in the same campaign as that character? Private homebrew content is always automatically shared within a campaign.
(Though ostensibly it should be hidden if you've disabled homebrew content for the character... Maybe double-check that homebrew content is disabled on the first tab of the sheet, just to be sure? The toggle should be greyed-out, with the circle on the left side.)

Triple checked, homebrew content is disabled, and yet the background is there for the character.
As swift said. Homebrew is not removed from the character when toggled off only not shown to be selected. If you selected this background before turning off homebrew, it would still be there.

Should I just remake the entire character? Like I said, I can't even find the background in the list of Homebrew content on DNDB. so it's some kind of anomaly.
Is it private homebrew being shared with you by someone in your campaign?
Just change the background to something else. Toggle Homebrew off (or just move away from the Background section or refresh to make sure the page is updated). Try seeing if you can add the background again. You shouldn't be able to.

It's similar, but not quite the same.

Have a feeling it is homebrew, considering it doesn't appear on the backgrounds list at all https://www.dndbeyond.com/backgrounds.
Yup, that is homebrew.

Have you selected a different background, closed and then tried reselecting it? :s

I did this twice. Triple checked.
