Although fire is not a solid, for purposes of this spell the sphere is treated as so because they have conditions for ramming it into targets.
This, plus the spell never lists a penalty for entering the sphere's area. Taken together, that strongly suggests it's not possible to pass through it. Compare to Wall of Fire, which'll immediately burn you if you try.

It's perfectly possible for something that isn't solid to ram into things; this just means the sphere stops, not that it would stop someone trying to move in the other direction. In general, I would be leery of allowing an object that cannot be damaged (it has no AC or HP) to block movement, unless the spell explicitly says it can do so, and I'd treat trying to pass through the sphere's space as identical to the sphere ramming you.
It's always been a solid obstacle. Both 2nd and 3rd edition had this text:
The sphere moves as long as the spellcaster actively directs it; otherwise, it merely stays at rest and burns. It can be extinguished by the same means as any normal fire of its size. The surface of the sphere has a spongy, yielding consistency and so does not cause damage except by its flame. It cannot push unwilling creatures aside or batter down large obstacles.
I think an ape proficient with rock should definitely be proficient with magic stone, but should not be proficient with anything else. But the ape only has a 'prof'. bonus of +2, so it's not that big a deal.

Assuming the Flaming Sphere is cast in a 5ft wide corridor or inside a door, can you move through it to get to the other side?
Are you asking if fire is a solid? I would say ~5' of fire can fit in a ~5' passage.

The 4e version stated it occupied a square.
