That wasn't quite what happened the rouge looted seven dead bodies and ransacked the upstairs of the pub before anything else happened. Everyone else stood still in a burning pub.
Anyway we've played a few more games since and we've overall got much better at playing the game from a mechanical point if view. My wife and I have the most experience overall but we still have big gaps in our knowledge.
The DM is now asking people what are you doing to try to engage all the players equally which wasn't somthing that was happening before. This has overall made the group more patient and willing to wait their turn to suggest a solution to a problem or make an action.
The other big change is she's now asking to roll initiative much soon in combat encounters to prevent long drawn out arguments about tactics.
However despite all these improvements there is still an underlying element of conflict between me and my brother in law's characters.
After a pretty deep conversation with my wife and a lot of inward thinking I belive that what's happening in the game is just a magnification of our relationish in real life. I would like to point out we don't hate or dislike each other; but I've never really gelled with him as we have very different outlooks on life and can both be very strong willed at time. In short we live different lives in different social circle, and after 8 years of being family I don't think it's going to change.
The campaign is coming to a close in the next session and after which I will hopefully be working full time again and so will leave the group.
After all it's just a game as my wife puts it and I have more important things to do like earn a living to support my household post covid19.
Thanks all for the feedback you've all made me a better player.

Out.
When it's your time to go, you may as well go out with a pint in your hand.
"Not all those who wander are lost"
In my case normally a pint of irnbrew.
I no longer drink due to me being a professional heavy goods driver.
But honestly go out with grace and try not to cause any fallout with family. It's just not worth it.
Plus I really want to give an adventures league game ago in my local games store.
I think that it would be very healthy for me to play outside the extended family.
