I haven't been able to find something on this, and am wondering how you would rule this. I have a player playing a small race with Mounted Combatant. If they were to mount a Bear totem Barbarian/Moon Druid, would you allow them to confer the bonuses of Mounted Combatant to the Moon Druid? Mostly in regards to Mounted Combatant's third effect:
If your mount is subjected to an effect that allows it to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, it instead takes no damage if it succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if it fails.
To me, this just makes that player nigh unkillable. Or I feel like I have to overtune encounters so that there is some semblance of a sense of danger. Is there some ruling somewhere that would make this not work?
As a DM, because there is no written ruleing against it, i would allow it. I would try to encourage teamplay and synergy effects. But i would also make it clear, that i will keep an eye on the situation and if it becomes unbalancing that there may be a rule change from my side comeing up. Most likely i would start by limiting it to the moments when the Bearbarian is calm/ not raging and can listen to the rider.
When i say unbalancing i refer more to the internal balance of the group itself. If the BearDruid hogs the spotlight or if other players drop like flies while the druid barley get‘s scratched, i will first review my counter measures and as a last resort i would limit the feat.
The Feat itself was designed with low lvl unintelligent mounts in mind. As long as the rider has full controll over the mount, this feat makes sense, but once the mount gets its own will/action economy it may become a problem.
Posible counters: Trying to outdamage a Moondruid/Bearbarian is a lost cause no mater what. Rage/Resistant/Extra HP from Wildshape/Selfhealing as a Bonus Action all make them nearly impossible to kill in a straight brawl. Try to concentrate on effects that seperate mount and rider or that hit them both.
To quote the rules for mounted combat: „Once during your move, you can mount a creature that is within 5 feet of you or dismount. Doing so costs an amount of movement equal to half your speed. For example, if your speed is 30 feet, you must spend 15 feet of movement to mount a horse. Therefore, you can’t mount it if you don’t have 15 feet of movement left or if your speed is 0.
If an effect moves your mount against its will while you’re on it, you must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or fall off the mount, landing prone in a space within 5 feet of it. If you’re knocked prone while mounted, you must make the same saving throw.
If your mount is knocked prone, you can use your reaction to dismount it as it falls and land on your feet. Otherwise, you are dismounted and fall prone in a space within 5 feet it.“
Create Bonfire hits both, Thornwhip seperates them, wolves have a secondary effect that knocks the target prone, any npc can grapple or shove, you can try to seperate them from the rest of the group, divide and conquere. Use indoor areas, kobolds don‘t need 10ft wide tunnels.

RAW this should actually work. Mounted Combat in general also refers to willing intelligent and independent mounts, such as dragons.
I would, however, force the druid to wear a specialized saddle for the appropriate beast form.
