My main question is; does all thrown weapons count as ranged weapons? In other words if I chose archery, which states ranged weapons not bow or crossbows, and choose to throw nice big rocks, will I get the +2 bonus on my attack roll? I saw the new Thrown Weapon Fighting option for the Ranger but would rather have the +2 on attack roll than the +2 dmg.
Have an Orc Ranger/Beast Master with an orangutan animal companion and we like throwing rocks :)
Throwing rocks would be improvised ranged weapon attacks. This works fine with archery. The wording of the throwing style I would say adds the damage, but doesn't let you draw (pick up) rocks as part of the action, so would limit you to 1 rock per turn (item interaction).
A significant difference between the fighting styles is that melee weapons can have the thrown property and are not ranged weapons even when thrown (though they are ranged weapon attacks).
[Edit]Improvised weapons are neither ranged nor melee weapons. Bummer. Maybe DM will house rule that for ya.

The only one on the list that is a ranged weapon is the Dart. EDIT: Correction, nets also count.
I believe rocks would count as improvised weapons unfortunately, and thus not qualify for either fighting style.
Huh ... I think you can make Mai from Avatar if you use both the Archery and Thrown Weapon fighting styles and equip yourself with a lot of daggers and darts.
I think it is meant to work with all weapons with the thrown property. Creating a fighting style that only works with the dart is a total waste of the game dev’s time, an utter waste of money for Wizards and not to mention completely pointless. No, thrown weapon style can be used to attack with daggers, thrown axe, light hammer, javelin, thrown spear and all the other weapons that are thrown weapons.
That said, thrown weapons are not ranged weapons in the main, even though they are used to attack at range. It’s both a peculiarity of the english language and due to the choice of wording. So if you wanted to combine both the archery and thrown styles in a single attack then it’s dart only.

It is and it does. No one said otherwise, and you are the 4th one to mention it.
The OP is mostly asking how the 2 styles work with throwing rocks.
So you can use both Archery fighting style and Thrown fighting style for additional +2 to hit and damage with a dart but not a rock, bummer. Kind of a cool idea for the OP.
A rock isn't considered a weapon, therefore it wouldn't work with either style. A rock would come under improvised weapons. The only thing that might help is Tavern Brawler.

The thrown weapon fighting style adds 2 damage. A thrown improvised weapon is a thrown weapon. Since it isn't a ranged weapon or a weapon with the thrown property, it can't be drawn as part of the attack or get +2 from archery.
It occurs to me that the Thrown Weapon Fighting Style might be better paired with the Dueling Fighting Style. This gives some very consistent base damage should you find other ways to boost your hit rate.
Taken directly from the improvised weapon section, rocks are improvised thrown thrown weapon, you don't get to add style or proficiency bonuses unless they are very similar to an existing weapon. There is no thrown weapon similar to a thrown rock other than a catapult.
"f a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet."
Thank you all for your input. I was really hoping to throw rocks like one of the Ape's Actions in the monster manual: Ranged Weapon Attack 1d6 + STR, range 25/50. But I suppose I am not a "monster". Still going to see if the DM might allow it. Or maybe I'll throw darts that look like rocks haha...probably not. I also didn't think about Tavern Brawler feat, which does fit in with my character and his orangutan who constantly brawl like brothers. Thanks again.
Thrown Weapon plus Dueling seems to be the most solid all-round option. The Dueling part still works in hand to hand combat.
The first two parts of Sharpshooter also work with this if accuracy is an issue. The third part does not but if you have both Dueling and Thrown Weapon then I think the case for using that third part is usually weak anyway.
Duelling fighting style requires you to be holding a one handed melee weapon and only applies to attacks made with that weapon. A rock isn’t a 1h melee weapon so duelling style would not be applicable.

There is (arguably) no weapon with the thrown property similar to a rock, on that I agree.
(1) Do you disagree that if you throw something, it is thrown? (2) Do you disagree that an improvised weapon is a weapon?
If not, then "a ranged attack using a thrown¹ weapon², you gain a +2 bonus to the damage roll," applies to improvised ranged weapons that are thrown.
1. Of course something can be considered thrown when it has been thrown.
2. No, RAW is very specific on what is a weapon and what is not, and what to do when there are similarities. A pool queue would be considered a quarterstaff. A chair leg could possibly be considered a club. A rock is a rock, a chair is a chair, an ale tankard is an ale tankard.
Improvised weapons are in a completely different category to unarmed strikes or simple weapons or martial weapons or natural weapons. You can play all the word games you want but you know I am right.

So an improvised weapon is only a weapon if it resembles a simple or martial weapon? So you are of the opinion that you can't smite with an improvised weapon like a rock, chair, or tankard?

I know improvised weapons are a completely different category (at what point did I say they weren't?). All I've been claiming is that improvised weapons are weapons. There are no word games, and you are wrong.
Weapons are weapons because they are called weapons. If improvised weapons were not weapons, improvised weapons would not be called weapons.
I’m going to stop responding to you now as it is pointless. You clearly know the rules and are trying to manipulate them in order to get your idea to work. That’s homebrew not RAW. You should start a new post in the hombrew section.

You still haven't explained how a thrown improvised weapon is not a thrown weapon. RAW says "thrown weapon." I don't know how it isn't RAW.

You would need to check in which table the weapon appears.
For instance, a dart is listed as a simple ranged weapon.
A dagger is listed as a simple melee weapon (but has the "Thrown" property).
No, not all thrown weapons count as ranged weapons. Here is a filtered list of weapons with the thrown tag: https://www.dndbeyond.com/equipment?filter-search=thrown&filter-cost-min=&filter-cost-max=&filter-weight-min=&filter-weight-max=
