 That would be too easy, players could just buy a Potion of Lesser Fire Resistance for 1 GP off of one of the locals. They might encounter some Fire Elementals or Wisps, which might balance it out.

Since I'm getting a second chance at this topic:  I obviously second all the people who say that, as DM, you make the decisions about how the universe works.  That said, I have leaned into 5e's lack of a clear route to permanent magic to power a sort of Arms Race among the various empires on my world as each explores different techniques for making the quantum jump from high-fantasy to magepunk.  Not a recommendation, just an example of how considering the arbitrary limitations can help you flex your creative muscles.

To give a more on-topic example:  Gate is written to have a one minute duration and concentration.  We can hand wave that away as DMs any time we want to.  

But to me?  

That sounds like a Death Star countdown sequence.  That sounds like a hundred flunkies pushing buttons to ready some massive apparatus designed specifically to allow a tiny tiny speck of the Prime Material to touch the ELEMENTAL PLANE OF FIRE!!!  For a whole minute!!!

Actually, yeah, I'm planning the gate to be more of a "Evil Superweapon" thing than a "heehee portal go brrr" sort of thing.

Build a "Stargate" or a magic circle from material that are associated with fire or heat (maybe get it from the plane of fire), inscribe it with sigils that attune it to the plane, install crystals, pylons, statues or whatever kind of thingamajig conduits to absorb/siphon, focus and distribute the heat/energy. Kick it off with a Gate spell, that's powered continuously by the attuned glyphs. Don't forget to install minions and a self destruct button.

But if its used to power whatever, why not create a series of small portals, could bring a nice element of "we got to shut them all off in time to..."
