Have you ever had a story moment or a dice roll or a series of things happen in game that made you sit back and reconsider what you thought of your character, suddenly put a lot of focus on your character in defining who they are, or suddenly shifted the whole narrative?
I had one of these moments last night I want to share during my game with long time friends. There is only three people in the party including myself. My character, a shorter/smaller then average Dragonborn Barbarian, was doing his best to keep his party moving last night in our task to rescue some people who had been kidnapped and made slaves at a large mine. Even though he was doing his best his fellow party members kept getting distracted or getting in quibs in on him being related to kobolds (we came across some underground where we were that led to this) which he was trying to ignore and stay focused. It was near the end of the session and we were trying to cross a ten foot gap on a broken stone bridge over a ravine (a bridge mind you we are crossed over twice previously with out issue) when the Half-Elf Bard, who had been rather arrogant and obnoxious up to this point, rolled a nat 1 on his jump across and fell into the ravine. Instead of finding a way down or assuming him dead, like the last party member a Human Monk did, my caution to the wind reaction was have my character dive after the Bard (which is a character trait he has). Luckily there was water at the bottom of the ravine and both characters turned out alright and a small shore nearby to swim to. This one nat 1 has led to an odd narrative shift now between the two characters. The Bard thought my Barbarian hated him as he knew how much he irritated my Barbarian with his arrogance and obnoxiousness, but now he finds my Barbarian willing to jump off cliffsides to save him. Then there is my Barbarian who is now thinking more about what the party means to him and is not sure how to take the lack of concern from the Monk. It has suddenly flipped the dynamics and narrative of the group.
It is amazing moment, but wanted to see if anyone else had those story/narrative/party shifts due to a roll or other factor.
