So my son has showed an interest in learning to play DnD but he has a detailed image for a homebrew game world in mind. Specifically, he's picturing a cross between Breath of the Wild and Pokemon.
I'm leaning towards using 3e and making the player characters and major villains as gestalt Primary Class/Sorcerer hybrids but with their Sorcerer spell slots only usable for summon spells. It's a fairly intuitive and simple conversion of the existing rules.
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to suggest an alternative method using 5e? I'd love to introduce him to that system and I think DnD Beyond will hold his interest a bit better than pencil and paper RP. I'm sure it would be possible to homebrew something suitable on the the app, but I frankly have no idea how to even get started.
I'm open to and grateful for any suggestions the community would be willing to offer.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure that no D&D is a good choice for anything Pokemon-esque. If it's just the enemies who are fighting with their summoned critters, then it's easy to homebrew, because you really don't need any special rules for it, but once it's the player doing it, you're pretty far off the rails.
For introducing new, especially young, players, 5th has the advantage over 3rd that you have the online tools, and it's a simpler system. But, as I said above, I don't think the tools will help you.
There are other RPG systems out there, that are mechanically lighter than any D&D, but I don't know of one that'd be good for Pokemon. (It probably exists; I just don't know of it.)
