I have created a warlock, specifically to use as an NPC. I'm leveling him at 5th with some experience and skill primarily as backfill in a family tree story for a related band of siblings and their father. Essentially this warlock is a never-really discussed uncle. Not evil, but leaning shady and known to be a mover and shaker in some darker doings. I'm imagining some earlier travel having led him to or caused him to stumble into a fey-world encounter, one that caused an allegiance that estranged him from his family...But I want to write it well so that it will read well and stay true to what is accepted fey-lore. So, anyone willing:
1) In Faerun lore: are there any regions that were noteable "hot-spots" for Fey activity/interactions...Maybe adventure modules/campaigns that would serve as reference...I mean that Fey-world is a whole different plane than Faerun from what I'm gathering and portals can be anywhere...BUT if there are particular places coincidentally near where this family I created are from, a wander into the woods backstory would help build some continuity. I'm a lifelong fan and player because I love the telling, playing, living out of stories through the eyes of the characters in it but I'm a bit oblivious to details and parameters so I want to do it in a way that keeps it mostly possible in the world this warlock is to exist in.
2) Is a Fey patron or Archfey patron likely a named one and leader of sorts, or just a random troublemaker?
In FR there are a number of Fae rich areas - almost any elven ruled wild wood would actually do. However, my 2 favs are shadowdale in the dales - the lord there has welcomed fae after the spellplague, and the border forest north of Teshendale - virtually unexplored but reputed to have fae connections. Also the woods near Phlan where one set has seelie connections and the other has unseelie. As for patrons they would have names almost certainly but might not give them out. Names grant power in Fae so while they might have a number of titles or “nicknames” their true names are not known or given.
In the PHB, there is a brief mention of romantic interests with a patron. I was all over that in a heartbeat. My warlock fell in love with a devil and pledged her life to service. The patron agreed to granting some power in exchange for getting the warlock's soul after death. Now all the warlock must do is get enough power and prestige in life so that they earn the love and respect of their patron.
My current character began life as a Wayfarer, an outcast with negligible hopes for a nice life. On one occasion, he showed a bit of mercy and compassion for some one who was worse off than him. One of the lesser Archfey observed this act and offered my character access to power and privilege in exchange for service. With this offer, my character was rescued from his wretched existence and set forth on a path to eagerly repay his patron for Her generosity. He currently assists an unlikely assemblage of heroes as they strive against various odds and in the process, provide his patron with something exciting to watch.
Im putting together an archfey warlock that is taken/stumbles into the feywild as a child, is taken in by their future patron and is basically taught to survive. Ultimately ending with them becoming a champion of that patron and returning back to the material plane.
The issue that i have is i cant think of a reason as to why the patron would return them to the material plane. What good would a champion be to a archfey, what would they get out of it? Things like fiends or GOOs stereotypically seem to be after power but archfey are more tricksy than that, so what would they need a warlock for? https://100001****/
Atm the character isnt being made for a certain campaign so no need to discuss things with a DM but more wanted to get some ideas for a fey backstory
No mortal truly understands a Fey's reasoning. Sure, Fiends may plan for events centuries in the future, and the Old Ones are mysterious, but both want power. What's a fey to do when time is meaningless in the feywild? How do you plan for something? Time is weird, right?
Instead, they focus on chaos--bringing joy or pain. Maybe now, maybe later. It depends on when the mood strikes them. Maybe your patron sent their champion out to cause all sorts of mischief. But not directly. More of--I wonder what this pet will do if I left it unsupervised but put a GoPro around its neck. Who's he going to see, what's he going to do, what sort of problems will he encounter. After all mortals lives are so fleeting, its exciting just to watch.
And maybe if he doesn't do anything exciting I add/subtract from his power to see what he does...
