So I've been posting about this over on Twitter (@sunwarrior25). I've pretty much decided that if I'm not gonna find a group any time soon, I should probably fill my time with something. So how about I turn the backstory for this character I've been sitting on for over a month now into a comic? Yes, I'm excited and nervous. No, I'm not formally trained in comic making. Hopefully my supply of broken colored pencils will pull me through?
I'm more asking here to know if this is a good idea or not. Also to see if anyone is actually interested or if I'm just wasting more time I could be spending on something else (like churning out more characters I'll never get to play). Also also looking to see if anyone can help me figure out some plot points?
In short: Svelt is a tiefling with a battered and bruised past. She's accepted a contract with a devil, thinking it would be better than the alternative (is it?).
In long: Svelt is the only tiefling born to a family of humans who didn't want her. She's never known her mother, and her father shuns her, as does the rest of the family. She spent 12 years growing up in a small farming village who hate her presence. She couldn't set foot outside the hovel without risking an assault from passers by. She would spend her time indoors cleaning when family was home, and practicing her thaumaturgy when she was alone. Some nights she would sneak out for a bit, but she never got far.
One day, she walks out during the day, knowing what might happen. Why? Who knows? The predictable happens: The villagers confront her, throwing both rocks and racial(?) slurs. She tries to [Tooltip Not Found] the crowd using thaumaturgy to boost her voice. It only succeeds in making the crowd more violent. They end up beating her unconscious.
She wakes up later in the woods; battered, broken and bruised. Sitting on a stump nearby is a charismatic old man, wearing a crimson (and frilly) business suit. He explains that he has done her a favor, and that she is in his debt. He then produces a contract for her to sign, to work off this debt. Svelt is very surprised to be able to read this contract, especially since the text doesn't match any of the runes found in the village. The contract itself is rather long, with many words and phrases that catch her off guard. Frustrated, she begrudgingly signs the contract. In exchange for this man's continued power and support, she would have to give up "something important". (<-- This is vague on purpose. I'm using it to imply something I'd rather not say out loud.)
The man then carries her injured form through a previously unseen portal to hell. Yes. Hell. There, he reveals his true form: A lawyer. Specifically, one of hell's prosecutors. He brings her to his Right Hand, a cambion, who he tasks with caring for Svelt until she recovers, in addition to her regular duties. Of course she (the cambion) is not pleased to be babysitting a mortal. Thus begins Svelt's internship in hell. Kinda.
This is about where I'm stuck. Do I start Svelt in hell? Or should I find a way to plonk her down in the material plane? I'm honestly not sure which scenario she'd survive better...
If hell: The story'd focus on her internship in hell, gaining her patron's trust and eventually becoming more than just "the pet mortal that the boss dragged in".
If material plane: She'd be balancing patron errands with party interests with fantasy world prejudice.
Really excited to play this character, can ya tell? ... Except it appears I'll have to be a writer instead. Does that mean I'm my own DM?
That seems like a rather altruistic devil, what do they want in return? More art is always better, but ultimately, you will be the one best suited to decide how to spend your time. As far as finding a group, I recommend keeping on trying. There is a subsection of the forums here for players seeking a DM and vice versa. D&D is the best game.
I honestly have no clue what this devil has planned for Svelt. Taking a soul is obvious, if a little boring for my tastes. Regardless, the exact behaviors and goals of such a creature would be beyond my control as soon as I find a DM who's willing to help with this.
As for finding a group. I've posted about it here, over on Twitter, and on the Roll20 forums as well. So far no one's taken the bite. Oh well, more time to write this thing I guess.
Since I still have infinity time until I get to use this character, I've expanded her backstory. Here: (link)
It's still very W.I.P., with some elements that may need to be reworked multiple times before I'm satisfied. Either by rearranging when they happen, or rewriting how they happen. Also, I'm still new to using D&D lore, so some things may be behaving in a non-canon manner? I'm... honestly not sure what they're behavior should be, or what reasons they might have for behaving against type.

Any help with this would be appreciated.
