Faerun novice, here. Didn't read the novels. I've learned some about the world through campaigns back in the day (3rd, 3.5) and now with Hoard of the Dragon Queen/Rise of Tiamat.
Getting ready for a new campaign. And despite the description provided in the PHB... I have no idea if there's an official place dragonborn are "from."
I've found that it seems elves and somoe others are similarly "placeless." Or maybe "homelandless?" Everything is sort of integrated; elves are just ... from wherever, the city, the forest, etc. Sounds like there's an elven kingdom that includes the Misty Forest. Maybe my dm just hasn't bothered to explain things as fully as has been developed for the setting.
It just hasn't quite made sense in my head yet what dragonborn communities or enclaves would look like. Is there a Little Dragonborn in Waterdeep? Are there towns founded by dragonborn? Having difficulty connecting to the race in a way that matches all this clan loyalty they're supposed to have.
Have any stories fleshed any of this out, or is it fertile ground to just come up with novel stuff?
Dragonborn, being a product of 4th Edition, don't really have much of a defining section of the Forgotten Realms carved out for them, as that edition was based in a different setting. Generally speaking, you can expect to see dragonborn in just about at many climates and locations as you would expect to see dragons (not that the two are closely related like half-dragons and such). You are likely to find a handful of them in various towns across the Realms, and likely could also find little pocket communities where a bunch of them have banded together. As an example, this is a map commission that venatusmaps did for a person wanting a cool dragonborn enclave:
The city of Dragonclaw, a settlement devoted entirely to a lineage of Dragonborn, created as a commission for a supporting patron.

"The mongoose blew out its candle and was asleep in bed before the room went dark." —Llanowar fable
In the Forgotten Reams resource book for 4e, Dragonborn are mentioned as coming from Abeir to Toril. These are sister-worlds that coexist out of phase with each other, with Toril being the planet where the continent of Faerûn (the Forgotten Realms) exists.
So Dragonborn come from another world, where the majority settle on Laerokond, a continent on Toril that is separate from Faerûn. The entire continent actually came from the world of Abeir.
Of those Dragonborn in Faerûn itself, most are within the Tymanther. This is a nation of Dragonborn, I believe also ripped wholesale from Abeir.
One thing of note is that the Dragonborn on Abeir and the continent of Laerokond are enslaved to dragon masters. Tymanther's origin in Abeir was as an experiment of freed slaves, a rebel nation. I dont know if 5e changed any of that, though I think more time has passed so that it is not as fresh or recent a memory.
So there are some options. Dragonborn can be from anywhere still, it's still wide open with possibilities, these are just options that can root your Dragonborn into the racial history of its kind.
This is a video that somebody that went and did research on the subject and explains what he found and his take on it. I found it interesting and helpful. Hope this is of some help.

Remember this is a game and it's suppose to be fun for everybody. Let's all have fun and kill monsters.
I can not recommend Erin M. Evans books in the Brimstone Angels-series often enough if you want to learn more about Dragonborn. She practically wrote all of what they are in 5e Forgotten Realms (mostly in the latter three books though).

I actually found info similar to this on a wiki. It's possible that things advanced even from the snapshot you describe above, but either way, it was helpful to see your summary; thanks!
It sounds fairly... overly convoluted to me (no wonder they didn't really go into it in the PHB). But it's interesting enough to incorporate some of it into my character's world view.
I'm working on a backstory that won't touch much on it, but I want to be able to use when reacting to other characters.
Currently planning a fighter (battle master) that dips into warlock (celestial) here or there. Trying my best to make a fighter, but can't quite bring myself to single-class it😀. And warlocks are just really flavorful in terms of concept and powers.
I also like knowing where my PCs come from. The dragonborn I built to play comes from a community on the southern slopes of the Firesteap mountains. If I remember the map right, it’s in south-southwest Faerun. I read on the wiki page that there were communities living in that area, so I just made up a village, or more of a tribe, of green dragonborns that take preparing youngsters for adulthood very seriously. My fighter is a teenager in their scouting program who is out on his own to earn their equivalent of Eagle Scout. He has to keep a journal and get people to sign off on his logbook of exploits to be turned back in when he goes home.
A few years late, but YES!! For anyone recently looking up where dragonborn originate, please read the Brimstone Angels series! It's sooo good. The last two novels focus on Djerad Thymar, the capital city of dragonborn in Tymanther.
Djerad Thymar is a giant pyramid city where their defence force, the Lance Defenders, ride giant bats! Massive catacombs make up the city, expanding far underground with many generations of ancestral crypts. Walls are lined with carvings of (or actual dragon skulls) and beautifully detailed mosaics of their ancestral stories, most notably of ones of the dragonborn rebelling against their old dragon overlords on Abeir. Honour and clans mean everything to dragonborn, who actually prefer to be called Vayemniri (Ash-marked-ones in draconic).
In the last decade or two they have been at war with the kingdom of Unther, who recently returned from many years of magical displacement to the dragonborn's old world of Abeir, and the two nations war against one another furiously.
In a Dominon of Dragocondominiums. Dragocondo fees go the ensure the presence of a Draconomicon in every condo and hotel room in the Dominion. It's going to be in the next UA along with the Path of the Dragon Barbarian with DRAGONRAGE.

Sweet picture!
Alright, I hadn't realized the 4thEd lineage 😀

Cool! I'll have to give them a look-see!
