Hello fine folks of DND Beyond! So just last night while my players where running my homebrew campaign, one of the player/characters told the monster that was stalking them to and I quote " Go f**k yourself". Context is this monster is a homebrew creation of mine and it prevents sleep, so good ol' WIZ boy was upset, sure that is cause to be upset but the sentient monster didn't take that to kindly and it with a pack of homebrew 4 CR1's "shadow dire wolves" attacked. My party was level 7, the main bad creature was a 8 CR homebrew monster called a "Shadow werewolf"; now before the "OMG CR 8 against two LVL sevens, that's not fair!!!" My players have taken out many monsters WAY above what they should have before, and I even went light on them and used only one attack instead of the monsters two. Combat began with big werewolf first, players second, and shadow dire wolfs third, the shadow werewolf got a good chomp into the wizard (going for the wizard first for many reasons, 1. The monster is smart enough to know he is a weaker target. 2. The Wizard more likely to flee/ separate from his Pally+Warlock ally. and 3. He is the on that was oh so rude to it soooo.. kinda not happy with him.) After the shadow wolf, has a hold of the good ol' wizard, aka grappled/restrained, he does what I/the wolf planed on, misty steps 30ft. away from the Pally at this time the shadow dire wolves appeared on the battlefield surrounding the Pally. Pally turns begins, and he gravely injures one wolf; wolves attack and they get some nice chunks of his health because pack tactics are crazy and NAT 20's HURT, the 58 hp pally took 40 damage on wolves first turn. Werewolf turn gives Wizard another bite scare, wizard being a squishy boy again misty steps away 30ft. again and hits the werewolf with a spell. Pally uses next turn to full heal; wolves go again and by all that is holy drops the Pally like a rock, I usually role in front of my players for combat and let's just say the dice were NOT in my players favor, 1 miss and 3 NAT 20's put him down hard. Big wolf boy turn goes and yet again catches up to the Wizard but misses. Wizard again misty steps, and uses magic missile, and hits for not to much damage. Pally does death save, dunno result because on the wolves turn they ripped his body into pieces, melee attacks against an unconscious creature..yikers... Big wolf stops chasing Wizard to rejoin the other wolves to drag Pally body away, the wizard then gets 1 guard from the very small town. They head back into the forest, Wizard uses false life to bolster his health as they try to receive the Pally's body, good hungry wolf boys go on the hunt again, NPC guard is turned into a meal. The wizard lasts pretty long, my dice gave him a chance, but he runs out of spells and time and the wolves finally took him down. Was I to hard on the players? Was it just bad luck? What really has me upseat is the Pally player, a friend of mine tried taking his frustration out on his npc/pc follower. I told the players to make some new LVL 7's. Pally friend asked if he could take over the npc follower of his PAlly, I originally said no, since the npc was given lvl 3 after the living so long, and didn't think the npc earned 4 levels out of nowhere.... The player then said "Well he's MY PC/NPC so I CONTROL HIM" me being me said that he only controlled him for combat, I am the one that gave them life/personality. During the argueing the player said again the NPC/PC is killing themself... this isn't the first time this player has done this, so I stood firm and said no, I will take over the NPC and figure out a story point for them, more arguing, the other player tells us to call down, I do but the player gets the last words that "his npc/pc kills themself"... *sigh* can't kick player form table since it isn't really my home/table, so... I might not DM/play with him again to show that if you're going to throw a fit and argue with THE DM over an out of character action just because you don't get your way/your character dies then the consequences are you lose a dm/player. Should I have handled it another way? I'm just tired of me and my other dm friend giving him to much leeway on fighting with the DM over stuff. Might just talk to owner of house aka other dm friend about it... the main problem is that this play is a good friend and we do enjoy playing with him, we don't kick him since the player has had/has depression and even though it isn't said, I'm sure we fear they might take their life. Like... it is a very tough and unique situation. I really have a tough time with this so any advice about this helps. Thank you and may the dice ever be in your favor.

Hi I'm Chris! Been playing and DMing DND for 9+ years, I still love to learn but I still wish to share my stories and experiences for others to enjoy/view. May the dice ever be in your favor! :)
Oh right.... didn't even consider that at first, dunno why. Thanks for the advice

This sounds like a no-win situation. Why was this creature stalking them? Why did it not attack him until he hurt his feelings with some words? This really makes it feel like retaliation. Taking away the Wizard's ability to regain spell slots surely sounds frustrating to me, especially in a 2 man party. What part of the story were you trying to drive forward with this? The encounter balance is a little crazy considering 1 CR 8 is a deadly encounter for 2 level 7's. When you add 4 CR1's you have given 120% of the party's DAILY BUDGET in one combat. I wouldn't put the potential for that kind of encounter in front of my players without some sort of story reason I'm trying to drive forward.
TLDR: I wouldn't engage my party into a TPK encounter for telling one of my monsters to go !@#$ themselves.
The entire craziness at the end is just...frustrated people arguing with each other.

If you're worried about a player taking their own life over a D&D game, they don't need a DM - they need a therapist. Seek help for them.
Oh right.... didn't even consider that at first, dunno why. Thanks for the advice
