l have a idea for my current pc to have a powerfull mage for a parrent, and was woundering if they would be a valid warlock patron. (l want hexblade, but the idea is dads a divine soul sorcerer, so would l be a clestial warlock?)
if yes, what are the logistics? would my powers cut off if they die? ( lt think so. but l want to know for sure)
(yes, l know the dm has final say, but l currently dont have one, and might even BE the dm when l use this (doubt it, but you never know), with this being a npc, but l still want feedback)
It certainly is possible, although I'd expect that it'd be rather unlikely and extremely rare. The warlock pact is typically with some sort of otherworldly being that bestows some magically ability upon the warlock. If your character's father is some sort of super powerful archmage, then it wouldn't be unreasonable to say that this arcane juggernaut has the ability to create a few warlocks to serve him. Some sort of modified find familiar spell that creates a warlock bonding instead?
I would question why the character didn't follow in his father's footsteps and become a wizard (or wizardly equivalent). A lack of intelligence or arcane aptitude, perhaps? I could easily see the archmage giving up hope that his "incompetent" son would ever become a worthy wizard as well, so he instead grants him a portion of power as part of a ritual pact. Son now serves his father not as an apprentice wizard but instead as a warlock.
Either hexblade or celestial warlock could work, but I think the former would be more reasonable. The idea that the father creates a magical weapon as part of the binding ritual makes a lot of sense...gaining celestial sponsorship from a mortal spellcaster fells less intuitive, although still feasible.

wow, l really like your idea! mind if i use it for a pc?

oh, "modified find familiar spell that creates a warlock bonding" thats a good idea! (though its something a wizard would do, more then the divine soul sorcerer the characters dad is, but hey, whats a noble without a court wizard, right?)
If the idea resonates and works for you, then please feel free to use it.
Got caught up on the "wizard" aspect and didn't really focus on the sorcerer part so much, but that doesn't mean that your divine soul sorcerer couldn't create the warlock binding ritual. As an NPC, you can easily give him the Ritual Casting feat, which would allow him to perform spells as rituals (such as find familiar). Taking that concept a step further allowed him to devise his find/bind warlock ritual to accomplish the above mentioned ideas. Yeah, a wizard would be more apt to perform those spells and rituals, but we're creating an NPC that doesn't have to be held as strictly to the rules. After all, he's powerful enough to have warlocks serving him, so I'd cut the guy some slack on the particular games mechanics. ;)
You're very welcome, and I'm glad that you found the suggestions useful!
Best wishes on fanning the flames of that those sparks ignited. And, if you're willing to share the details of whatever you ultimately create, I'd be interested to see how you ultimately develop them.
well, right now l'm almost done makeing the dad npc. hes the current king of (redacted), and only one with the "divine blessing" (divine soul sorcerer) may be ruler (think the dragonborn emperors from the elder scrolls)
heres a link to his sheet:https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/DnDNewper/characters/42767810 (hopefully these arn't editable, lol) (l don't have divine soul unlocked, so its not there, other then that and some flavor/RP stuff, like a name, hes done. ) (not sure how long the link will work, but its here for now)
also, the original plan for the family was to be my pcs, with me working with the dm for stuff like names and where they rule, but i have ideas on how to incorporate them into my homebrew world l have been working on. (king dad is always going to be a npc, but now l have a idea for the 6 siblings to be PC's, but rather then mine, each one would be played by a diffrent person. not sure on all the logistics yet, but ideas aren't reality until they are.)

Very cool and thanks for sharing! Like the idea of having the siblings make up the adventuring party.
By the way, the link that you provided does not allow me to edit/alter the original document (or at least that I could tell).
I didn't think so, but thanks for confirming!
