The Battlemaster maneuvers aren't spells so a raging Barb can use them. There are some pretty powerful ones in there not the least of which can help hit if you crap out on a die roll. Has anyone played one of these and what did they think?
I have never played, but sounds like a great combination on both ways — either taking Barb 3 for Reckless Attack and sub-class perks or Battlemaster 3 for Action Surge and maneuvers.
I've seen this build in a few actual play streams, and it absolutely shreds. Battlemaster is already an S-Tier fighter, both because of how powerful and dynamic it is, but also because the maneuvers pair so easily with multiclass builds.
The one that sticks out to me was a player who was mostly a Zealot Barbarian with 3 levels of Fighter to get Maneuvers, and they also had the Polearm Master feat. They mostly used Menacing Attack and Riposte... between Riposte and Polearm Master they were landing big, meaty reaction attacks practically every round. I believe they were playing as a half-orc for that extra meaty crit... especially since Polearm Master gave them a bonus action. I think they also eventually picked up Great Weapon Master, which, when paired with Reckless Attack, makes for a character that unloads truly obscene amounts of damage round after round.
Thanks for the input. It was one of those ideas that sounded good (because I've played and DM'd for both Barbs and BM Fighters) but I've never seen it done.
D4 on YouTube talks about how Fighter/Barb is superior to straight class. Depending at what level of play, more of one vs the other. Basically, rage and reckless attack is fantastic. Pair that with the fighter’s extra attacks and it’s fantastic.
Currently playing a Githyanki, Bear Totem Barbarian (4) and battlemaster fighter. (7). Started at level 6 after the death of another character with Barb 3 figher 3 and has just gotten tougher and tougher every level.
My DM let me pick an uncommon item... i offered a few things like luck stone to increase Saves... but he let me take Adamantine breastplate. (No Criticals). thinks he regrets that but honestly only come up once so in retrospect i'd have chosen the luck stone for extra saves (especially the Int, Wis and Charisma.)
So, I'm in Breastplate and carry a shield and hammer. With a cloak of protection I have an AC 19, can't take crit damage and when raging i'm (2014 rules) resisting all damage, adv on dex saves and +1 on all saves. Oh and Tough feat so a ton of HP.
Warhammer with crusher feat is meh dmg and the push from "Crusher" is rarely useful but annoys the monst. Reckless means I hit a lot so steady damage if not a ton.
Manuvers;
Riposte. Has won a few battles but rarely count on it. Only works on a miss and only a missed attack roll not a spell save etc.
Brace. super handy, if I push a melee mob back and they advance to attack I get a reaction attack.
Menacing. Since i'm right in the mobs face, giving it disadvantage on all attack rolls and saves while i'm in its sight is super potent.
Pushing. Again, super situational but with crusher the possible 20' push would be cool. (5' crusher + 15' from push maneuver)
Maneuvering. Super situational but I can run in, attack the mob and add maneuver damage then 'bump' a colleague to get out of range without Opp attack. could probably "push" the mob back for the same effect but giving a colleague half their movement to run to cover is waaay better.
(dropped maneuvers) Tripping. Useless most of the time. Too many mobs can't really be tripped (beholder, flying stuff, blobs) and I already have adv with reckless.
