My players have just taken part in the dinosaur racing within Tomb of Annihilation. They were asked to take one of the dinosaurs and ride it in the race and if they placed higher than 3rd then the Merchant Prince who owned it would discuss selling the dinosaur to them at a discounted rate. One of my players loves dinosaurs and literally made this the first thing they did when arriving in Port Nyanzaro. not only did they win the four legged race but they won the free for all race as well, on a race course I extended to 600ft rather than 300ft and with five additional dinosaurs racing.
I am currently trying to decide how much gold I should give to them as a reward, baring in mind that they’re only 3rd level. I had written in that the merchant prince owner had put a massive bet on them to win both races at impossible odds. I want to reward them but I don’t want to break the game by giving them too big of a reward too soon. does any one have any suggestions or a system that would help work it out for myself. thanks a lot.
It really comes down to whether you want the player to have a racing dino buddy or not. If you're OK with that, then just have the prize money be enough to buy the dino with maybe a bit of coin left over -- and a promise to the prince to come race for him again, if they make it back alive
If not, give them enough money to buy a couple lower-power magic items (if that's what they choose to do with it, and you've decided they would be available in the city). If you go by DMG pricing, 1000 gp should get them a couple +1 weapons, or a +1 shield and a cool uncommon item, that sort of combination. If you use the Sane price guide instead, the prize money might need to be more like 2000 gp
Rather than picking a number and worrying about whether it's too much or too little, figure out the upper limit of what you'd like to let the player/party buy with it and give them the equivalent value. Heck, as the prize in the big race, you could even just give them a magic item directly plus some extra cash -- homebrew a version of a figurine of wondrous power that's a velociraptor instead of a mastiff, or something like that
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)

I love this idea. Thank you so much. I will take all of this onboard.
Especially the figurine.
