Weell, to toss in my two copper: a mirror is still indispensable for a spellcaster because- You can be behind cover or a wall, use the mirror to confirm that a direct line of sight does exist without potentially exposing yourself to the danger... then step out, cast the spell, and return to cover. It also has other uses such as a scrying material component, signalling when magic might not be convenient, etc etc.
and, I would argue, that you can step out, keep looking at the mirror, and fire a spell "while facing the wrong way" because you can still see the target and there is still a clear line of sight and line of effect (behind you), so nothing stops that from working... consider it a flavor thing, unless the optional facing rules are actually in effect.
