You could also say that if by some method (like magic initiate) a monk gets shillelagh, the quarterstaff and club becomes a better option since you don't have to use both hands to get the d8 damage and become magical for one minute at the cost of only a bonus action.

Oh, yeah, for sure. Sorry for just throwin it out there XD
Homebrew is essentially anything (spells, races, classes, items, etc.) that is made for D&D, but not in official D&D content (like their books and things.)
It's like fan-made cool stuff. Does that make any sense, or did I just confuse you more?

hello people im new to dnd but eh why WOULD monks use spears in the first place i mean like they are monks... lol idk maybe I'm just dumb
A low level monk hits unarmed at a d4 damage. A Spear or Quarterstaff used 2 handed deals a d8. So why would a monk use one? It is more effective in combat than not using one.

I'm probably laughing.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
Bludgeoning damage has added value against skeletons and anything that likes to bleed caustic blood on you when you break its skin. Piercing has value against Rakshasa if you are good. Overall, bludgeoning damage has the much more common extra value case. If you want a ranged option, carry a shortbow.

Or a boomerang for extra bludgeoning with the advantage of a miss coming back to you

A spear is a monk weapon right? Simple weapon, doesn't have the heavy or two-handed properties . . . it's versatile d8 just like a quarterstaff but you can also throw it in an emergency, why don't I ever see monks picking up one? Is it because it isn't iconic? Because This beautiful fight from the movie 'hero' begs to differ!
Just wondering why you don't see monk spear builds as much as, say, monk quarterstaff builds (or the rigamaroll to get a monk with a d10 longsword). Any thoughts?
You've been playing with incompetent monks. The spear is the best monk weapon unless you have access to longsword/battleaxe/warhammer proficiency.
CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING THE FIRST TOXIC POSTER TO RESPOND TO THIS THREAD!
Here's your placard, your ribbon, and your flowers! Yes, they come already killed off and withered because you are so toxic.
Here I am asking why I don't see monks using the spear so often and you call every single monk I've ever played with incompetent even if they decide they like the flavor of a bo staff better, or maybe they want to start play with a magic sword and so have a moon-touched shortsword at level 2. But no, they are all thrown under the bus! GOOD JOB SIR!
And even though i was talking about not SEEING monks use spears, a.k.a. in live streams or when talking to other DnD players in other groups, you assume I only associate with incompetent players! Man, good job, just . . . top quality toxicity for the boards. Mwa. Par Excelance.
In your own opinion, is this less, or more toxic than Quindraco's post? Just asking. I think it's worth consideration.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

It took some prompting, but the monk finally used my expy of the Bright Spear in combat during our last session...
If/when I ever get to play my Sea Elf Monk, he'll use a spear.
Why? Because he's a Sailor/Fisher by trade and his spear is how he does fish.
I love that.

Hello, nice first post! Also, monks using certain weapons is sort of just based on opinion (In my opinion :) ).
