Variant Tiefling (Winged). I suspect that it will quickly become apparent that I am not min/maxing. I initially planned to make an Inquisitive Rogue/Hexblade 'Lock, because the Hexblade would basically allow me to dump dex, and the pact weapon would let me use a whip as a finesse weapon from flying. That way I could be the group Face/Skill Monkey without sacrificing combat effectiveness (we have no other Cha-based party members). Now, with stats this good, I could take Spell Sniper right away to get Booming Blade to work with the whip, but it seems like a waste since I'd get my second attack just one level later...
Current backstory is Urban Bounty Hunter, who used to specialize in contracts to hunt down rogue mages of all sorts. The flavor of Eldritch Sight (Detect Magic at-will) is another reason I wanted to multiclass. I'm a sucker for good flavor.
TL;DR I'm looking for inspiration. What multiclasses have you ever wanted to build, but decided they were too MAD? Preferably some that start rogue, but the DM will let us mess around a bit up until level 3 ,so I can change fairly dramatically if you have something particularly interesting that would also suit the backstory.
I have considered rogue/sorcerer. It might sound odd, but I think a 3 level dip to give you access to subtle spell could play very nicely with an arcane trickster.
I'm actually playing something close to what you are, a Swashbuckler Rogue / Hexblade. I think the two characters classes work well together. Another combination I'd consider is a Rogue / Ranger. There is a lot of synergy between those two classes.
As a Rogue, you are the find traps and disarm them guy, so you want to be careful about having Dex as your dump stat. I'd have that as your second highest stat next to Charisma. Failing to detect or disarm a trap correctly can put you in a whole lot of hurt.
Thanks for the idea. I talked it over with my DM, and we are taking a very "common sense trumps strict rules interpretations" approach to the campaign. As such, we have decided that a feat like War Caster, which would somehow let me make finger gestures while holding a mace, means that my character can also make them subtly out of combat with a stealth or slight of hand roll. Same would go for Pact of the Blade spells. This will be with sliding difficulty: always successful for cantrips, easy DC level 1, etc.
So, the Sorcerer dip would be less valuable. Warlock dip will, I think, give me access to more relevant spells (I won't be casting for DPS 99% of the time), and spell slots that reset on short rest are awesome. So right now the plan is Arcane Trickster, with warlock for better (more) slots.
Looking for inspiration. I rolled super well. Level 1 stats, after racials (+2 Cha, +1Int) are:
Str: 8 Dex: 16 Con: 15 Int: 11 Wis: 15 Cha: 18 (can be re-assigned)
