New to D&D and I want to play a character off of a build I found on youtube. I'm just not sure how to progress the build past the third level as the video just covers the concept and not a full build. Would greatly appreciate it if someone could help guide me with a step by step of what they recommend I take for each level. The video is in the link below for reference.
Not sure if this helps, but for skills I would go with Insight and Religion and either Acolyte, Faction Agent (for persuasion) or Hermit for Background. Gift of the Gem Dragon and Metamagic Adept are probably your best feats, so use the first to boost your wisdom by one at level 4 and then add two more to wisdom at level 8 to max it out. After that just keep boosting your Constitution to max. If you aren’t allowed epic boons take metamagic adept before you boost your Constitution at level 12. If you are, the simplest one is Boon of Dimensional Travel at level 19. You want your Racial boost to be +1 to Constitution and +2 in Wisdom. Use point buy to put all your points in Strength, Constitution and Wisdom. If you have access to customize this, pick whichever race you want! If not, consider Hill Dwarf, High Elf (for booming blade) or Warforged (although this one doesn’t really fit your theme.)
i’m not sure how new to the class you are or not, but that’s how I’d build this class for 2014 as it was intended. It is basically how I would build this class normally. I’m not sure about any particular spells of feats that provide the “blood healing” you are going for, however. Sorry. Hope this still helps at least!
The video does cover the full build, though it also has errors in it (i.e. that cleric doesn't get access to vampiric touch), it is level 1-20 life cleric with Aasimar as the race, focusing mainly on Life Transference.
If you want to play as the dark angel healer it's pretty much correct. There are two ways to build such a character either using Life Cleric or Death Cleric, however in general Life Cleric is the better option mainly because of its proficiency in heavy armour which will give you better survivability on the front line and your healing is way better which is what you'll be best at regardless of your choices. However, Death Cleric is more thematic and gives access to a lot more thematic spells including Vampiric Touch, however, it's overall weaker because most of those spells aren't actually that good and the lack of heavy armour leaves you vulnerable on the front line.
If you are new to D&D I wouldn't recommend playing cleric at all because to play one well you really need to learn a lot of spells since you can change your spells prepared every long rest. However if that's really what you want here is a pre-made dark-angel healer:
Origin - Species: Necrotic Shroud/Fallen Aasimar, 1st level Feat: Tough, ASI using Point Buy: 9+1 (STR), 14 (DEX), 14 (CON), 8 (INT), 15+2 (WIS), 11 (CHA) Background: Acolyte (Insight + Religion, Languages: Abyssal + Infernal) Backstory : you were born into a cult worshiping a god of death, your divine nature led to you being worshipped as a savior by part of the cult, however the leader of the cult grew jealous of how much the other members worshipped you and secretly tried to kill you (up to you how) you were left behind barely alive only to be found by a kind person who took you in and nursed you back to health. Knowing that if the cult leader discovered you were still alive, they will come after you, you left to seek a new life far from the cult.
Death Cleric Build: Level 1 - Death Cleric (Skills: Medicine + Persuasion), take scale mail, and a shield. Spells: Chill Touch (Reaper), False Life (Death Cleric), Ray of Sickness (Death Cleric), Toll the Dead, Spare the Dying, Healing Word, Shield of Faith, Inflict Wounds, Guiding Bolt, Bless Level 2 - Spells: Sanctuary Level 3 - Spells: Blindness (Death Cleric), Ray of Enfeeblement (Death Cleric), Spiritual Weapon Level 4 - Spells: Aid, Feat: Warcaster Level 5 - Spells: Animate Dead (Death Cleric), Vampiric Touch (Death Cleric), Life Transference Level 6 - Spells: Spirit Guardians Level 7 - Spells: Blight (Death Cleric), Death Ward (Death Cleric), Banishment Level 8 - Spells: Guardian of Faith, Aura of Vitality, Feat: Gift of the Gem Dragon (+1 WIS) Level 9 - Spells: Antilife Shell (Death Cleric), Cloud kill (Death Cleric), Holy Weapon Level 10 - Spells: Summon Celestial Level 11 - Spells: Heal Level 12 - Spells: Harm, Feat: Gift of the Metallic Dragon --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alternatively, what I'd actually recommend is playing a Paladin. Paladin is great for new players because you get introduced to a little bit of everything, it has RP and character motivation baked into it through it's oath, you can hit stuff with a weapon, you can cast spells, you can support your friends, and you are good at talking to NPCs.

Oath : Devotion
Honesty. Don’t lie or cheat. Let your word be your promise. Courage. Never fear to act, though caution is wise. Compassion. Aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them. Show mercy to your foes, but temper it with wisdom. Honor. Treat others with fairness, and let your honorable deeds be an example to them. Do as much good as possible while causing the least amount of harm. Duty. Be responsible for your actions and their consequences, protect those entrusted to your care, and obey those who have just authority over you.
