Hi, I´m going to be in a pvp contest with my friends and I´m kind of new to DnD and one friend is really teasing me about it. I´d like to prove him wrong.
Points about the contest
- 3 player team (I already have two friends that are going to be with me and they´re good
- we´re going to be working with the 2024 rules
- character level 6
Those are all the information I have right now and I´d love to hear some ideas and tips on what character/fight strategy to use.
For pvp you want a high initiative, as initiative is often the deciding factor since PCs are kind of rock-paper-scissors balanced against each other. Things to boost your initiative are: Alert, Harengon, Swashbuckler Rogue, Chronurgy Wizard, Dex-focused build.
Flight is also OP in 2024 rules because melee has gotten major buffs but ranged combat has been nerfed. So Aasimar and Dragonborn are both great choices for pvp.
AC is going to be increasingly important because it is easier and easier for your opponents to get advantage over you and there is also many ways to get absolutely astronomical AC (alternatively you might want have saving throw-based approaches to damage your enemies).
Monk can be absolutely deadly in pvp in 2024, because their Defect Attack can negate 1 attack that hits per turn, and they can relatively easily stun any opponent that doesn't have proficiency in CON saves (i.e. druids, clerics, wizards, rogues, rangers, warlocks, and paladins) - particularly deadly for casters since stunning strike also breaks concentration. PCs also don't usually have anyway to see through darkness so Shadow Monk can be very effective.
A charisma-focused Paladin is still a massive boost to the party thanks to Aura of Protection but it's a bit harder to pull off because of changes to feats - Devotion is the best subclass now because of the bonus to hit that stacks with advantage.
2024 Sorcerer is just better than Wizard for combat - more spells prepared, Con save proficiency, and cool class features.
Some Suggestions:
Divine Tank - Human Devotion Paladin (Tough or Alert as second background feat), Custom Background: Magic Initiate (Wizard: Blade Ward, Toll the Dead, Shield), Strength/Charisma. Fighting Style: Defense, Equipment: Plate Armour + Greatsword. 4th level Feat: Sentinel. You are nearly untouchable with +3 bonus to all your saves from Aura of Protection, advantage on 3 saves from Gnome, an AC of 19+5(Shield spell) means your enemies need to roll a 16 or higher to hit you, and they can't just go fight someone else because of your Sentinel.
Battlepriest - Cloud-Goliath Cleric-6 (Alert as background feat), use Spiritual Guardians + your bonus action teleport to consistently hit all your enemies with damage each turn, while protecting you concentration with Warcaster (optionally pick up 1st level in Fighter for Con Save proficiency). Go for Light Domain so you can blast your enemies with Fireball and Scorching Ray or Guiding Bolt at the same time.
Vengeful Angel - Aasimar Fiend-Warlock-6 (Alert as background feat), grab Pact of the Chain (Sphinx of Wonder or Imp), Devil's Sight, Agonizing Blast, Investments of the Chain Master, and Lessons of the First Ones (Tough). Take to the skies and pelt the enemy with fireballs, and EB from the safety of a black void of Darkness, while your familiar helps out at ground level. Pick up Fey Touched at 4 for a little extra mobility and spellcasting.
The Dragon - Dragonborn Open Hand Monk-5 + Fighter-1 (Tough, Grappler). Fighter-1 lets you pick up a shortsword and scimitar plus two-weapon-fighting for an extra Nick attack and possibly some free advantage from Vex, to combo with your Stunning Strike and your special flurry of blows. Take to the skies to keep yourself safely out of reach of your enemies, or carry them with you with Grappler and drop them to the ground.
plant growth is insane(druid). Have the rest of your party create characters with at least some ranged fighting capability, and prepare call lightning and heat metal. Make sure you are far enough away from the other party to not get counterspelled.
Why not a barbarian-fighter multiclass? I'm new to DnD but i know from the podcasts i listen to these are powerful beefy classes that have a insane amount of hit points.

Plan with your friends. Find ways to enhance each other or protect each other.
