Ok, so I already know someone's going to say "Echo Knight is supposed to be Melee focused!"
I know. But I'm trying to do something fun with it here.
Specifically, the idea here is to use the Echo Knight's mobility and utility to create a sort of Pseudo-teleporting Archer/Gunner, while using the Echo itself as a meat shield, bonus attack through a Finesse weapon, and teleporting around the battlefield for the best position.
Can anyone recommend some options? Someone already recommened a Wand Sheath for the extra utility, and I like that idea.
The echo won't work as a meat shield without a melee weapon equipped because enemies have no incentive to attack the echo. But it works perfectly fine as a way to teleport around out of the reach of enemies in order to maximize the effectiveness of a ranged weapon. There's not really any options to take to optimize it though, just max out your DEX and pick up the ranged weapon feats.
If using 2024 rules, take Alert as your origin feat then XbowXpert at 4th level, then max out your DEX at 6th and 8th level.
If using 2014 rules, take XbowXpert at 4th level, then SS at 6th level, then max out your DEX at 8th and 10th level.
Maybe pick up Mage Slayer at some point because that's fun thematically as the anti-mage magic fighter. Or you can always MC into Ranger or Warlock once you get to 11th level if you want more magical utility, though honestly that's often overrated unless you have a really small party.

Echo knight is excellent for ranged combat actually, the speed at which you can move around the battlefield is crazy, plus dex based ranged classes already out perform strength based characters. You could take sentinel, build AC, let your echo sit in melee and opportunity attack to lock down enemies. Definitely multi into tasha’s ranger (gloomstalker) if you’re doing 5e and go wisdom based, max out dex and take sharpshooter, take mobile, and go crazy with it. If you can, rogue is also an amazing option for running away.

Doesn't the Echo die from any hit? I'm not sure how that makes a meat shield really.
Your Echo shares your AC, but yes it has 1 hp. Dex based characters should have pretty good AC (if you’ve got defense fighting style + max dex + studded leather you should be at 18 without a shield, which is really good). Crossbow expert doesn’t require you to have a second crossbow to make your bonus action attack, so you could run crossbow + shield for 20 AC without magic items.

**Dragon attacks and hits the echo for 50 damage.** That's 50 damage that the party didn't take.
Fair point, but getting intelligent monsters to attack a translucent image instead of characters may be an issue.
