the armor part is more fluff at this point as the better part is all the rest of the benefits - HP, extra attack, weapon proficiency, advantage on attack rolls, etc. and con save proficiency

And yet it's listed among the mechanical benefits, in bullet list no less, right smack in the center.
To be fair Tonio, Beastmaster subclass was like that in the players handbook. Benefits that are tricky to utilise socially and in combat make little sense. (and make your gameworld lore on what the bond entails a bit of a nightmare) Just like TT, the limitations and problems can be manoeuvred around but whether the efforts worth it or even thought of by many gamers is another, personal matter.
After I take several levels in wizard class, I take two levels of fighter class then continue in wizard class.. That gives me access to light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons and martial weapons. Also, fighting style (usually Defense), second wind and action surge. My Diviner/Fighter wears half-plate and uses a magical longsword. Buff spells, such as green-flame blade/mirror image before combat then Tenser's Transformation is really neat. When you want to get nasty out of melee, fireball, then action surge, then fireball.

However, as a Bard's magical secret spell, it is a killer....
