My character has picked up a magical weapon that contains the essence of a powerful Oni (Japanese demon not Monster Manual) and it is essentially cursed. My character does not know most of this information, just that it is really good for smashing the enemy. Jade Tetsubo (Maul +1 and 1d6 Necrotic Damage)
I have been thinking that it makes sense to dip into Hexblade Warlock a few levels. I know that I can't cast or concentrate on spells while raging, but features like Hexblade's Curse and Invocations like Devil's Sight are still useful regardless. Also some non-combat utility would be nice.
I already wreck face as it is so it is not so much about adding power but mostly from a Role-Play perspective, but in your opinion, does this seem like a ridiculous idea?
Human Barbarian (4) Bear Totem (Urchin Background)
Str 20 Dex 16 Con 16 Int 9 Wis 10 Cha 14
Athlete (1st), Great Weapon Master (4th)
We rolled stats and I got lucky with an 18, 16, 15, 14, 10, and 9. I put +1 on the 18 and 15 (Str and Con) and Athlete added another +1 to Str for the 20.
As a side note I think that I am going to take Prodigy with my next ASI
It certainly would work better than say Druid (which has a ton of concentration spells). There are some like Mirror Image and Armor of Agathys that can be precast before raging.
I would make sure you get Barb 5 for the extra attack though at some point, and not rely on the Warlock invocation.

From a non-combat utility perspective, this could be a really useful dip.
From a roleplay perspective, characters don't become warlocks unknowingly. Usually, you get your powers by making a deal with your patron.
From a progression perspective, barbarians actually have pretty good level 20 features. Always consider the opportunity cost.
Role play wise, it would be a deal she knowingly makes should it happen. I as a player know about the Oni and the curse, but my character does not so this is all just speculation at the moment.
I am not certain that this character will make it to any levels higher than 10 so I tend to keep level planning to 3 or 4 levels ahead. You are right though.

I beg to differ. Characters can become warlocks very unknowingly. They will realise afterwards where there powers come from and what the price is, but in this case I could imagine the sword binding itself to the bard and gently influencing him without the barb being aware of it. 5e encourages ppl to break with class stereotypes, the accidental warlock is for sure a possibility.

That’s a cool idea! The character may infer that the weapon he carries has all of these “daily” uses, charges, and powers that the character just assumes is a product of the weapon itself because he’s attuned to it - in reality it’s just pulling him closer and closer to his doom...

As for Invocations that pair well with a Barbarian, think of the following:
Cloak of Flies - adv on Intimidation and close-range damage. Nothing like a Desert-born Berserker that literally shoots bees from its mouth.
Aspect of the Moon - invulnerable to sleep while ranging? Excellent!
Gift of the Depths - Not even flooding will stop you from getting to them!
Gift of the Ever-Living Ones - pair this with a Healer and you’ll be a perfect tank up front.
Relentless Hex - Hexblades Curse isn’t a spell, it’s a feature, so you can combine it with this to jump around the battlefield and keep the rage going.
Some of the subclass features also pair well:
Misty Escape (Archfey) - use it to quickly get the drop on their weaker back ranks, and attack from invisibility on your next turn. “Escape?! More like Assault!”
Dark One’s Own Luck (Fiend) - Let’s see... Cloak of Flies and this? That’s like an average of 19.5 plus your skill bonus on a typical Intimidation check. Or a +5.5 bonus on a save.
Defy Death (Undying) - Relentless Rage and this... How do you actually kill a Barbarian????

All of these are good things to keep in mind. Thank you. I especially like these two.

Spell wise, I am not too sure what to do. The standard Eldritch Blast is obvious from a ability perspective, but seems off from an RP perspective. She is not going to be constantly raging so spells will be useful, but I am worried that spell casting is going to be out of character.
Misty Escape (Archfey) - use it to quickly get the drop on their weaker back ranks, and attack from invisibility on your next turn. “Escape?! More like Assault!”
I take it you would rename this as "Peek a Boo", I now also have images of Grog from CR, blipping around the battlefield, appearing behind an enemy shouting "BIDET!" and then battering the ever loving crap out of them!
