I'm creating a rogue with charlatan background. I'm not sure how to play the fake identity. Could you share some examples? Do you use your identity all the time including your party? How do you roleply this feature?
You could be a performer/entertainer whose fake identity is the one that they use when they're performing so that when they're not performing they can enjoy a quiet drink at a tavern without being bothered by fans.
You can have an identity as a local farmer and use that when you need to disappear because your thefts have gotten to be a little bit too noticeable.
You can be on the run and use your fake identity to hide from everyone, including the rest of your party.
You don't have to use that feature. Or you can swap it with another feature that better fits your character - features are meant to be "ribbons", not core abilities.
If you do use it, one example would be if you took the signet ring as part of the background equipment. You could pretend to be the imaginary Duke.
As for what you tell your party, why not take guidance from the personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws. I have a character who "lies about almost everything, even when there’s no good reason to."
My warlock charlatan uses his cover identity of "Maximillion du Champris" the great-nephew of the fictional Duc du Champris, a shipping magnate. It gives him the excuse of travelling anywhere as he's looking for new shipping opportunities. Combined with his Beguiling Influence and Mask of Many Faces invocations it's his go-to disguise.
If you don't have the PHB purchased on DnDBeyond or creating the character in a campaign where someone does and someone has a master tier subscription, you won't get access to it or much more than the SRD options. If those apply to you, then you're probably looking for it as a class and not a background (found on the description tab of the character creation wizard).
Tell the party a name that isn't yours, act confused when you get called by your real name, do anything to convince the players that you are someone you aren't.

There are so many options! Have fun with it.

Heh. Like Ron Swanson / Duke Silver.

I can't find charlatan as a choice!

Hello! I am just a relatively new D&D player, who also likes SimplePlanes and War Thunder.
My characters are:
I've never actually played Charlatan, this is interesting.
A lich beholder could and would fight God. I desperately want to make it fight my players instead.
