What if someone lathered themselves in mud, grappled an enemy, and another character cast Transmute Rock to turn the mud into stone? Do you think this would work to restrain an enemy?
If you read the text under "Transmute Mud to Rock" it states that anybody in the mud must make a Dex save or they will get stuck in the rock. Being grappled doesn't affect your Dex saves though :( It still works, but the character doing the grappling risks getting stuck in rock alongside the enemy.
I agree with your input, sort of. Even if the grappler has to make a DEX save, I get the impression that they should be able to choose to fail it. They're willingly getting stuck after all. But the thing is, only the creatures IN the mud must make the save. The muddy grappler is in the mud, but is the grappled character? I suppose what this boils down to is whether or not using Transmute Stone would make it so that the grappled has to make a DC20 strength check to escape instead of a STR or DEX check contested against the grappler's.
I suppose if the grappler bear hugged them and then the spell was cast then the enemy would essentially be trapped inside of a stone hug, so I think having them make a DC 20 Str check over the typically grappling contest is a good call
since they're stuck in the arms of someone who is stuck in stone, i'd say no real change...the person grappling can no longer grapple, but since they're stuck in solid arms (although not that big of a deal as its a super thing layer of rock, i'd say you still need to do a dex/str check to get out...just getting out of a slightly different hazard. grapples are hard to get out of because the grapppler is squirming along with you-actively moving to counter your moves...that disappears if they're turned to stone to just a fixed clamp...which you could wriggle out of.
