Hi, So as a player I'm inspired by how the Roman's had Marching Camps to protect themselves every night. I'm trying to figure out how what tool uses a party would need to replicate this and if it would be effective. How such supplies would the group need?
I know a Roman Army would make a camp hundreds of meters around and it took 3K-5K man hours of work a day, but a few thousand soldiers working. My question in a party of 5-7 PCs, with a Wizard with Unseen Servant. How feasible would it be to spend some of the camp time setting up nightly fortifiations? I'm guessing someone would need Carpentry to make the basic wooden structures, but would it require too many resources to effective build as you'd have to carry too much around?
hmm caltrops, string and bell, rope barriers, etc... There are some things that could be done simply and provide some advantage but nothing like fortifications IMO.
Unless you have an instant fortress or want to magically scape your environment.

Perpetually annoyed that Eldritch Knights can't use Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Smite, and Eldritch Sight.
Gotta love that Instant Fortress magic item, makes it great for roughing it lol. I had one from a DM in 2nd edition that you could put stuff it and store it, could only use the stuff if the Fortress was big. our group made the floor level a miny stable, and our sleeping and eating areas up above.
Mold Earth cantrip lets you excavate 5' of loose dirt moving it 5' away.
With 36 castings of Mold Earth, you could dig a pit around an 8x8 area. So that's 3.6 minutes of casting.
spend some time packing the 5' volume of loose dirt into a wall/mound/spoil.. call it a 3' wall once it's compressed.
Dig out another 5' for a privy.
Anyone sleeping would have 4/5s or total cover as they are lying down. Those on guard duty probably have half cover from the wall
That means the enemy has to jump down a 5' hole and climb up an 8' wall to get to you... or make the jump. They could jump it with a minimum of 10 Str and a running start.
Anyone in the hole would grant Advantage to melee attacks for the high ground.
If you do 80 casting of Mold Earth (8 minutes of casting). you widen the hole to be 10' across making it harder to jump.
Yes, one level 3 Wizard spell that can be cast ritually negates *all* of this.
