Note: I am saying species vs race as there is a difference and I have in the past years seen a lot of false inferences drawn from RPG game logic and real life.
When I think of what makes the human species distinct vs other species it would be the ability to use more tools (as the concept is presented in 5e) vs other species. So I think that humans should get extra tools based on their choice of background and possibly class. In general I do not think allowing an extra language to replace 1 extra tool would be a big game breaker in most games ( I have played in game where languages are huge and if that is your style having extra "power/options" could be an issue).
All tools (tool/instrument/game/vehicle) are not equal as use, frequency of use and usefulness vary depending on game settle and style . So in essence allowing a human more tools would possibly allow them to better adapt to environment and thrive in those environments. So an extra game/instrument could have RP benefits and allow them to stand out vs other species. An extra tool or vehicle I have found to be potentially more impactful in long session games (4+ hours) vs short session games (less then 3 hours) do to encounter time management, but not a huge power increase vs other things races have.
Proposal for 5ev2: Have humans get extra tools/languages for background and or class as a racial ability.
Thanks
