And it's not like they're not doing the same with Tieflings either. Cthonic Tieflings are a generalized undead-themed bloc, and abyssal might as well just be a watered down yuan-ti without the magic resistance and poison resist instead of Immunity.
No need to force the animal heads and call it a new race.
W ell, you got to remember It's a playtest. They are putting in provocative things to test out reactions. This might not be the final form, but just a form to see how people feel

yes, which is exactly the reason why we discuss and talk about how we feel about those things. (so we have the illusion they take in our feedback and make a better product)
i'd be okay with asimar as half-ardling. i would just ask that they address this in the blurb for ardlings ("On many worlds there's a specific name for half-ardlings: Asimar.") with a few generic lines we've seen before...

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!
I'll be honest. Between this, getting rid of half-elves and half-orcs as distinct races in favor of a 'generic' option (would Aasimar count there?), and the removal of ability scores (which is... I get what they're trying to do but I don't think it's going to play out like they want), I don't think they've really thought through these changes and it's going to hurt the game. I'd include my own concerns about how they're making tieflings universally accepted, but I got shown to be wrong there, but even without it it feels like they're changing things for the sake of changing things. I hope I get proven wrong once released, but as-is it feels like they really need to work through the whole set-up and rethink how they're handling races from the ground up cause a lot of these changes just don't seem to make sense.
Whatever form the default celestial race ends up taking, I just hope theres one ancestry that isnt tied to having animal heads, as its not really my cup of tea.
You have it with half-race option. Just play a half-ardling/ Half- what ever. Make it look like an angelic version of what ever that what ever race is and use the ardling stat line. Done. This is the wonderful thing about hte half races in this game.
One could think so at first until one realizes, that it makes race choice completely useless, as you can be anything with whatever traits you want.
No being what ever you want is the POINT of the race and half-race options. DnD is all about telling your tables story, your characters story. So YES you can play an Ardling without a beast head by just using the half race options. and that is the point of the half race options.
People who think Aasimar are boring are the same people that said a 'true to character' Captain America (or Superman) would never work. I mean, Superman is kind of the ultimate overpowered Aasimar: flight, super powers, and ultimately, incorruptibly good, and he has sold well since his introduction in 1939. That isn't to say that all Aasimar are good or that all are super powerful, but that there can be compelling stories told around that.
King Arthur and his tales have done well for even longer. Just because player A can't come up with an idea around them, doesn't mean they are worthless. My opinion of gnomes isn't fit to print in this forum, but some people seem to think they serve some (surely unfathomable) purpose in the ecology.
And just because the you are getting messages from on high, does not mean that life is easy, or that people necessarily believe you.
