My favority (probably wrong) theory about this is they're hiding an "actually there will be 16 classes in the PHB" surprise. With Artificer as the "new" expert, alongside a new warrior, priest, and mage. With the "48 subclasses" being 3x16 instead of 4x12.
That would actually be uncanny and unexpected! Maybe the Warlord for the Martials, Psionics for the Mages, Artificer for the Experts and Shaman for the Priests.
And I see the real niche for an "artificer/alchemist" character type. In a previous interview, they said that the classes should represent core, potent and resounding concepts of the real popular imaginarium. Well, I think that the "intelligent guy that solve problems with their intelligence" is very needed. A ton of chemist, physics, mathmatics and engeneers out there surley agree, hehehehe
I don't know where this is at with Artificers being a part of OneDnD on account that I haven't really kept up with it. I love the Artificer class through and wanted to log my opinion somewhere for them as an official class.
I know it is the most overlooked subclass but Alchemist as a role is just great. Outside the campaign I DM I also play and my character currently is a traveling snake oil salesman type potion dealer who latched on to a party of adventurers because he knew they'd help him get to rare components safely. He smokes ginyak weed and swears by all sorts of alchemical affects. I also have a shops worth of items in a chest on my back. The DM started to allow us to half potions so we can divide a 1 hour Invisibility potion into two doses of 30 minute Invisibility potions but he also added random overdose effects and stuff because everyone in our party is downing all sorts of crazy potions.
There is a lot to work with and I very much enjoy an Alchemist character. I've had two and the first was a Tortle. Both were really great and made me want to play D&D.
I didn’t go back and read through all of the posts but I believe I read somewhere that Artificer does not need any revisions and that the other classes need to be brought up to the same standard.
I think they should be part of the update just because their class has the weakest mechanical support. A lot needs to be clarified, expanded upon, etc.
I think they are refraining because they're on a deadline and it's not an easy fix. Everything else looks like it gets a slapdash new coat of paint. Artificer cannot be done like that.
(No.mentio. of the long lost mystic class either... which is for the best).

That is an excellent point. I really love the experimental elixirs and they come in handy every session but as an Alchemist/Merchant archtype player I really want more potions and poisons. Like I sold everything from my starting equipment and just picked up tools and a custom background for toll proficiencies all related to potion making: Poisoner Feat from variant human, Alchemist Supplies, Herbalism Kit, and Glassblower's Tools. It is awesome because for instance we took a month of downtime before the dungeon so I could craft the party a bunch of crazy potions while they went to Neverwinter to grab Supplies, but that took a month and hunting for components spread across multiple modules etc.
I would love if they included it as a base class and then put all the crafting times, rules, and effects in the same place or at least enough of them to be easy to look up like Spells for casters. For instance I have the craft times copy/pasted and adjusted for the Alchemist subclass cracting times with my INT into my Character Sheet Notes when those should be in the class or incorporated into the sheet like Spells. ... which are lame by the way. Like Spells don't even work in some situations but a potion never fails. ;-)

Finally, we are talking about this. I don’t know where this idea/theory came from but I really wish it were true. A pcsion would be awesome and the way you guys put it makes so much sense. I would also really like to see something like a warlord martial that’s main purpose is to play a support role as in moving other players, healing, stuff like that.

While we might get surprised with Artificer in the PHB the only psionics 5eR will have is Aberrant Sorcerer. They decided a while ago not to bring the psi point system into 5e. Psionics are just magic in this edition. Well unless later they see an opportunity to make some money and change things up, but not likely for the PHB.

Isn't the Playtest 7 Great Old One Warlock basically psionics too? It has psychic spells, and telepathy, and other psionics-related features.
Yeah, but still just magic. Technically you can still play Psi knight and soul knife in 5eR, but none of them brought back the psi point system I believe cergonian is seeking when he mention psionics. When they play tested the mystic the entire class was just emulating what other classes did, but with more complexity.
really, the new phb, if they were doing the concept of a version update correctly, would have included all the subclasses and classes in the game. 5e isn't three books anymore, revising 5e while only looking at phb stuff doesn't work that well, and in fact they had to incorporate various things from tashas and xanatars. But its fairly inconsistent, and somewhat problematic.
However they chose to go this route, so while artificer should have been in the phb, its highly unlikely it will be. And at this point they are struggling with just doing what they currently have.
Artificer needs to become a core class so that it can actually get support. Since it's not in the PHB it can't receive subclass updates from official WOTC products that don't reprint everything and it also isn't in the OGL/CCL so nobody can make 3rd party content for it or even 3rd party content that references it (such as for NPC characters).
I'm really hopeful that Jeremy Crawford playing an Artificer in the recent Acquisitions Incorporated live games indicates that they are trying to make the Artificer a core part of D&D going forward.

personally, they could add more subclasses and infusions. and I would love to see them if they did expand on it.

They don't need to be in core.
Instead, Warlocks should be able to be Int-based so that there's a second option for an Int caster without needing Artificer.
