"Backwards compatible" was plausible deniability for them not fixing or adding things the community really wanted, such as any amount of horizontal growth, character level tables, etc. It doesn't really mean anything.
Well, they did say from early on, which many didn’t catch (including myself), that when they spoke of backwards compatibility they were talking about adventures. And since monster CR’s are not changing, just the stat blocks are, they should be backwards compatible.
Also, they did make some improvements the community did want. But there are probably many that they did not or not to everyone’s satisfaction.
But I think in one of the recent videos, maybe the cleric one, I think JC mentioned a sidebar on something for handling a change from subclass at 3rd level now. Maybe I’m mistaken as I was listening in the car at 1.5 speed.
