First off, it never occurred to me that it worked any way other than the common sense RAI that Mr. Crawford mentioned in that link. It’s a technically between “A dart....” vs. “Each dart....” Frankly, I’m surprised he ruled it that way.
Second, take it with a grain of salt, about 25% of the Sage Advice tweets directly contradict each other at any given time.
The link doesn't really explain the reasoning.
Basically, Magic Missile deals all its damage to multiple targets at the same time, without any attack rolls. In this way, it's more like a Fireball than a Scorching Ray.
The spell explicitly states they strike simultaneously, and the PHB states, under 'Damage and Healing.'
If a spell or other effect deals damage to more than one target at the same time, roll the damage once for all of them.
That said, it's a niche case that is only really abusable through obscure builds. It most commonly occurs with Evocation Wizards, who IMHO won't break the game with a power boost.
Yeah lol we’ve argued about this at my table bc I wanted to just roll one die and the dm wanted multiple I sourced Jermey Crawford and he let me roll one instead of multiple. I like the ruling bc it makes magic missile more viable at higher levels but also high risk high reward. If you cast level 6 magic missile and roll multiple die the chances of you hitting max damage are almost zero making the spell not scale well. With only rolling 1 die you have a 25% chance for max and 25% for shit. It makes it more exciting and takes less time counting. And since there’s not an attack roll it’s one attack which makes sense why it would do the same damage.
The reason is that it is treated like an AOE spell since it specifies that the darts all hit simultaneously. Just like a cone from Burning Hands hits all targets at the same time.
It’s not how I thought it worked either and not how we actually play it. But that’s what JC said what their intention was though it could be worded better if that’s how they wanted it.
I swear, sometimes it feels like Sage Advice is trying to troll rather than be helpful. Never thought I'd miss Skip Williams.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Sometimes, that feels like the case, others, not so much.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:

Another medical problem. Indefinite hiatus. Sorry, all.

Have you ever made the eight sir Barristan?
