Hello! I have this Japanese themed campaign coming up and I wanted to play a martial Swordmaster themed character so in my mind I wanted to wear no armor and have natural armor which is why I would go 1 level barbarian and the rest of the levels would be fighter but is it worth it?
I don't think the campaign will last to level 20 so I'm only building my character to level 8 and we start at level 3. I'm going human because all non-human races are basically Yokai and I wanted to be a human (Variant or normal) swordmaster who overcomes all dangers with pure skill and no super powers from any Yokais or gods.
But so the question remains is it worth the 1 level dip?
It seems fine. It will give you unarmored and a couple rage’s which is always fun. You could also look at 3 levels of monk for kensai. Though that will be pretty MAD you might need to go rapier or another finesse weapon to make it work.
Barbarian 2 gives you Reckless Attack. You could flavor both Rage and Reckless Attack as samurai maneuvers or a kind of battle concentration state of mind.
