I am currently making a crossbow build fighter. Trying to go for the old western gunslinger feel with my character. I'm going variant human at lvl 1 to take the crossbow expert feat, then at lvl 4 I want to take the sharpshooter feat.
What I'm trying to decide is whether to take battlemaster at lvl 3 for the flavor and give my character access to "trick shots" (menacing attack, precision attack, and disarming attack) or if the complete advantage 3 times per long rest from the Samurai is too good to pass up.
I know that "fighting spirit" syncs really well with the bonus damage from sharpshooter, but I wanted to see if anyone could argue one way or another on what I should do?
It's nice to pick each other but if u look for combat usefull i pick samurai, using sharpshooter is not hard to choice because now u got advantage on full turn with action surge it gives u at 5 lvl - 4 advantage atacks with sharpshooter. True that with crossbow u can't use in bonus action addictional shot but it's gonna make you still scary for enemy. If u wanted to use that bonus action shoot u can pick battle master with precise shoot still it's easier to hit with ur crossbow. And u get all dices on short rest. For my opinion samurai is nice pick with bow where you have much better range with sharpshoter feat, and battlemaster can give you nice synergy with dices and still can use bonus action shot.
I still prefer samurai cause i like his other traits like nice persuasion bonus, or free wis save wich for fighter is nice when u deal with mind spells like fear. And with rapid strike u can get one more atack thankfully to your battle spirit so still got one more than normally. And last one making you one with 0 hp still concious and when you take turn inside enemy's turns, you can get away from danger and use saved second wind to make you health and concious or can drink potion and be alive ^^.
Battle master for me is kinda boring all you get is higher dices up to d12, and more maneuvers not all usable by ranged fighter. And one regained dice at start battle without any. "Know your enemy" useless on battle cause need preparations and observation for 1 minute and more usefull with RP means. That's what my opinion is.
So choice is up to you i show you my perspective so write what you pick ;) im curious.
I'm assuming you don't want Arcane Archer for flavor reasons.
Don't forget about the Martial Adept feat! You get to pick two maneuvers, which honestly with this concept is all you need.
Just look at each subclass and imagine how you would flavor them. Think of Know Your Enemy from BM: you walk into the street at high-noon, you size up the man across from you (for at least a minute) hands twitching at your side, ready to draw. But then think of Rapid Strike for Samurai: 3 men burst into the bar with apparent hostile intent, you fan your weapon and let the gods sort the sinners from the saints.
Both are cool, but I'd go with Samurai and pick up the martial adept feat at some point so you can still do two trick shots per-short rest. Maybe you accidentally killed a man with a trick shot, and you need more experience to regain your confidence and try those trick shots again?
