I enjoy playing goblin characters...something about those cunning little monsters appeals to me on a roleplaying level, where even the more neutral or good-aligned goblins can get away with commiting a bit of larceny without totally breaking character.
It helps that they have some potent features, too...their "Fury of the Small" grants them bonus damage that scales well, and their "Nimble Escape" gives them the ability to use their bonus action to "Hide" or "Disengage", making them pseudo-rogues.
Upon brainstorming a new character (and trying out a gnome Rune Knight), I realized that the Samurai Fighter pairs exceptionally well with a goblin.
I began conjuring a backstory about a goblin character...a lone goblin with empathy and a sense of honor, who turned against his own kind. More like a wandering ronin technically, he now wanders the countryside with his trusty crossbow, becoming a "Folk Hero" who hunts monstrous creatures.
A Samurai archer can already be quite strong...with "Crossbow Expert" and "Sharpshooter", the "Fighting Spirit" allows the fighter to make numerous shots with advantage, and have a decent chance to hit for maximum damage. The goblin's "Nimble Escape", which would normally be wasted on classes like a rogue, instead now allow the samurai archer to evade enemies who get into melee range, and allows the goblin to line up fantastic ambushes.
It should be noted that with "Relentless Attacks", which allows you to turn a single "Attack" with advantage into two normal shots, is not just limited to "Fighting Spirit"...the goblin can use their bonus action to "Hide" at the end of one turn, and open the following turn with advantage, granting them the same chance to hit twice.
Add in "Fury of the Small"...well, you get an incredibly vicious little goblin.
Sounds pretty cool to me! The goblin race is great way to get (sorta) cunning action without multiclassing into rogue, which is super helpful for an archer.
Flavor wise, it seems solid. As soon as you said goblin samurai I immediately thought of how hobgoblin-like the combat style felt—very tactical—and neat that a normal goblin would adopt that sort of life.
Yea that's a good way to put it, it IS very hobgoblin like.
I encourage pretty much any goblin character ideas that aren't "murderous children from some tribe". Goblins are awesome, and your idea is pretty neat.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.

Thoughts? Does this seem a solid concept?
The one concept hole I’ll poke.
hide actions don’t guarantee advantage on a hit. That’s just something most DMs lazily house rule to have happen. So depending on the stickler was of the DM/rules you’re playing by. That 1 scenario might not work. But easily fixed enough. And you might always be lucky enough to be a goblin who finds an Oathbow.
