Edit: chose to go Oath of devotion sword and board, hopefully its enjoyable as I've only ever played ancients before
I recently lost a character in my Out of the Abyss game I'm playing in (god damn Jelly cube!) so I need to create a new character and thats where I'm stuck.
I have a character concept in mind but unsure which class to go with. the concept is essentially a religious fanatic who serves the gods Helm, Tyr and Hoar, they are apart of the religious order of the gilded eye (from the sword coast adventurer's guide) and if I go Oath of vengeance she will be in a smaller secret sect of the order that take its ideals to the extreme.
For race I was thinking Half-Elf, born in a very religious family with many siblings, her mother was a cleric who took care of them and brought them up and taught them the ideals of Protecting the weak, justice and punishment. her father was a soldier in the military who died with her two older brothers (also soldiers, followed their father) defending a village under attack from Orcs ever since that she has a hatred of orcs. she served in her mothers order ever since she was little and once she came of age immediately became a acolyte.
For background I'm obviously going Acolyte.
but class is where I've run into a tough bind. I'm trying to choose between:
Paladin - Oath of Devotion, wearing heavy armor, using flail and shield. focusing on protecting, buffing and dealing justice!
Paladin - Oath of Vengeance, wearing heavy armor, using a Halberd. focusing on justice, punishment, revenge and smiting evil!
Rogue/Monk - Shadow monk inquisitor, light armor, daggers. focusing on weeding out lies and injustice and eliminating wrongdoers who have gotten away with their crimes for too long.
I'm also open to other suggestions! I've considered Bard at one point but I'm not sure how a Valor bard would fit an Acolyte background since I want to play a religious fanatic. I'm leaning more towards the Paladins because I haven't really played a stealthy character and not 100% sure its my style. do you guys have any advice or recommendations based on what classes could fit this concept, and more specifically how they would play?
Additional information about the campaign: we are currently playing through out of the abyss, we are level 7 and just arrived at blingdenstone.
The party:
Moon Druid 7, spends most of his time in a bear or spider form, tries to be the tank.
War Cleric 7, wields a big greatsword and is the beacon of the party, pretty much always has spirit guardians up and spiritual weapon. also our healer/ressurector
Ranger/Rogue 7, essentially a ranged rogue focusing on dealing damage and killing everything
I have an idea for a Divine Soul Sorcerer (XGTE, gives you access to the cleric spell list) with the good Affinity (gives you Cure Wounds)-- the idea is to be super cocky and overly righteous. Use my inherited powers to do good by everyone, helping them out, while destroying the evil that comes to be. Basically my feeling and introductory line would be "It is my duty to protect those who wish to propagate life by removing those who wish to extinguish it."
It kind of contrasts what you are looking, as you seem to be leaning melee focused more than caster, but I think you can make a divine soul sorcerer with similar character intentions/morals/goals.
edit: my idea was for a Protector Aasimar -- and being a sorcerer I was a descendant of my chosen deity (Lathander). My idea is that the character is born to embrace and protect life, it's in my blood, my angelic form. Also I went with acolyte, and was raised in a temple.

Thats a really interesting character, I like the idea of playing a literal descendant of a god. But I do kind of what to go for a more melee based character, mainly because I just finished playing a wizard who sat in the back and blasted away
Actually, you can really go for any class you want, mostly, and still have it fit your background. Bard, for example... many (most? all?) religious services include song, and many (most? all?) need people to pass down traditions orally, and inspire the followers, etc. The fact that you're a religious fanatic doesn't mean your abilities need to derive from it. So while Paladin, Cleric, Divine Soul Sorcerer, and Celestial Warlock are "obvious" choices, you could simply be a Fighter who fights for his gods/religion, you already have a concept for monk/rogue, you could play a Ranger who patrols the areas around the temples... hell, you could be a Barbarian who is filled with the zeal of your gods, which fuels his battle rage. Even a Wizard... you could always say he had an aptitude for studies, and a fascination with magic (which he associated with the Clerics of his gods), but having no natural skills for divine magic, he learned arcane spells instead. If you're allowing UA, you could even make him a Theurge, or you could pick Divination and fluff it as the gods speaking to him.
I'm guessing I didn't help much, if you wanted to narrow down your choices even more... sorry!

Thank for the advice! I actually ended up going for the devotion Paladin. but as I like playing religious characters (a little weird since I don't see myself as religious) I'm actually going to use your suggestions for other characters especially the religious bard and barbarian zealot!

How do you get a one-armed goblin out of a tree?
Wave!
