I wanted to play a one-shot with some people completely new to DnD, before maybe going into a campaign, where everyone creates their own characters. For that I created some character templates for them to choose from unassigned in the campaign. So far so good.
But: I got into a problem: If I just post them the join Link to the campaign, they can not view the characters from he screen, that they shall choose a character from. And after I posted them the (public) characters individually, I ran into the problem, that they could not view their background or personality (description page missing, if you are not the DM and it is not your character).
Two questions: Is this the intended behaviour? And if yes, is there any workaround, to achieve the things I am trying to achieve here?
The only one we came up with is claim the character you want to look at, study it a bit and then claim another one if you want to look into that one (unassigning the first one). That seemed very cumbersome and would have problems with 4 people doing it simultaneously.
I ended up creating a google doc, where I copied all of the character descriptions into there and put links to the public characters there for the mechanical stuff and stats, but it took a while and I would love to be able to do all this from just dndBeyond :D
You can create a public DM note in the campaign and list some details of the characters there. If they're pre-generated characters for a one-shot, I don't think you need to give the players a ton of info before they can choose. I'm not sure you need to put a lot of detail into the non-mechanical stuff to begin with either, I'd just sketch a few personality characteristics and let the players take it from there.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
I did not put that much effort into the descriptions, but since there was also some humour and some ideas in how to play the character in there, players still wanted to see it before choosing ;)

Heyho dear DnDBeynod comunity,
