Tasha's Cauldron released an assortment of feats with its release, among them, the "Artificer Initiate" feat:
You learn one cantrip of your choice from the artificer spell list, and you learn one 1st-level spell of your choice from that list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
You can cast this feat’s 1st-level spell without a spell slot, and you must finish a long rest before you can cast it in this way again. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have.
You gain proficiency with one type of artisan’s tools of your choice, and you can use that type of tool as a spellcasting focus for any spell you cast that uses Intelligence as its spellcasting ability.
This end up being a pretty decent feat overall...for Intelligence-based spellcasters like Wizards, Arcane Tricksters, or Eldritch Knights, at least.
Personally, I LOVE this on a Wizard...a full-spellcasting progression, while still being able to utilize the "flavor" of an Artificer?
VERY nice for concept builds.
My interest is in how people who take this feat utilize that last feature...when you character casts a spell, and uses a tool, how do you describe what it looks like...?
I have several ideas based around certain tools:
"Painter's Supplies" can literally "paint" a spell into being, or perhaps painting a symbol that represents a somatic component of a spell (similar to Okami). I envision something like literally levitating the magical paint out from vials the spellcaster keeps around their belt, or a bandolier.
"Cobblers Tools" can be flavored as a pair of boots; and used when the spellcaster casts a spell which modifies their speed ("Haste" or "Expeditious Retreat"), or when teleporting ("Misty Step", "Thunder Step", "Blink"). The spellcasting could be them kicking up dust with their boots, or getting into a sprinting stance.
"Weaver's Tools" has me very interested...combining "Thorn Whip" (which you can get from the feat), with spells like "Web", "Hold Person", "Telekinesis", or "Compulsion"...and you can create a character who utilizes magical threads to snare, restrain, or otherwise move around targets like a puppeteer.
I also like the notion of using an "Alchemists Kit" in a similar style to "Bioshock"...a spellcaster injecting serums into themselves to alter their form to give them magical effects. Great for Transmutation magic.
What are some of your creative ways of using this feat to style your spellcasting?
