RAW, no. The Steel Defender is a class feature for the Battle Master, not an actual infusion/magic item/construct to be given out.

Trying to get your physical content on Beyond is like going to Microsoft and saying "I have a physical Playstation disk, give me a digital Xbox version!"
Going to be slightly more charitable and say you can do what you want as long as the DM signs off on it, but if you're asking if you can do this using the rules as written then no, not really. Or at least not without making some allowances. There's the sidekick option for instance, or you could use a mostly aesthetic pet version of a steel defender that can't contribute in combat the way a normal one can, but neither of those can just be created by a battle smith based solely on their class abilities as written.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
"At the end of a long rest, you can create a new steel defender if you have your smith’s tools with you. If you already have a steel defender from this feature, the first one immediately perishes. The defender also perishes if you die."
You could try to make some argument about creating a bunch than reviving them all but it's clear that is not the RAI

What? I mean, the answer is no to all versions of this I can think of, but what?
You can't turn any of your party members into steel defenders, including yourself.
You can't make any steel defenders for other party members.
