My dm likes how i rp and avoid powergaming, I was going to make a warlock with a whole shadow patron calling to him trying to corrupt him... but my dm told me he would like me to play a werewolf and to find my own way to rp it. I am trying to understand mechanically how werewolves work, I am thinking of having him not loose himself to it and to have him be born a werewolf in an isolated tribe of werewolves who embraces the beast and have control of it acting like man and animal at once. I am interested in a chaotic neutral character with a strong pack mentality searching to help bring his bloodline back after his tribe had been cut down by a group of hunters.
So yeah no need to say "you can't do that" or "you guys shouldn't do it" because my dm was excited and i do like these kinds of things so it's fine as long as my dm wants it. I just need a few things answered so i can understand what i am doing since this is new to me.
1: how do I do this from character creations? like does my character get on top of what he normally gets? 2: can he use his class abilities in his transformation? 3: do i loose anything from being a werewolf? if so what? so i know to remove it before playing it... I don't like looking through books and asking these questions when everyone is having fun in combat or in rp.
Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions and yes i have the character i was wanting to play before as backup just in case my dm changes his mind for some reason.
Hi, I am currently playing a werewolf so can go off my DM's rulings for it, because a lot of this isn't specified in the books so it is up to each DM's interpretation.
1. Without homebrew you can't add lycanthropy to a character, so you just have to add it later. In terms of what you get, I got resistance to nonmagical slashing, bludgeoning and piercing attacks, the Shapechanger ability and the Keen Hearing and Smell ability from the Werewolf stat block. As well as that, "the character gains a Strength of 15 if his or her score isn’t already higher, and a +1 bonus to AC while in wolf or hybrid form (from natural armor). Attack and damage rolls for the natural weapons are based on Strength."
2. The way we rule it is that I can't use my class abilities in wolf form, due to not being able to speak (I play a cleric, so I need to speak for channel divinity and spells, not sure about warlocks) but in hybrid form I still can do everything.
3. The lycanthrope page doesn't mention the character losing anything, so I don't think you do. But its worth keeping in mind that your AC will change in wolf form (I believe its 11+dex).

yeah seems a sorcerer could technically cast if you grab what is needed to ignore the vocal component lol fireballin werewolf!
Jokes aside my DM wants to use the rule in the book but let me have full control with how i plan to rp so that seems to be the only difference with mine compared to yours is the nonstat changes and full control in beast form.
I am debating the best way for him to take advantage of his wolf form thinking monk or barbarian to work with it since he is from a tribe that embraced it but were neutral and not monsters but did hunt and live among the beasts like natives. I feel monk lacks a lot of subclasses i can flavor to fit it while barbarian has a lot of flavors that could vibe with the beast form lol. Druid is another option but as much as i like it I don't like how the both wild shape overlaps with shape change... I am debating on how to best take advantage of the werewolf form but that is rough mechanically like I am thinking a grapple build maybe but idk lol work in progress.
