I spent the last few days reading through Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons, while also plowing through lots of YouTube videos and I came up with an idea for a campaign. I’m looking for honest and open feedback.
Pulling on the idea of Dragonsight, somewhere in the multiverse a world exists that is ruled over by dragons, which each type leading their own ‘house’ with territories, industries and subjugated citizens. They are all grouped under the banner of some sort of dragon empire. This world found that the houses would expand and crunch into each other, leading to devastating wars and chaos.
To relieve the pressure of growth, and direct it outwards, the Empire periodically leads an invasion of other worlds across the multiverse. Each house sends a contingent into the new world and the houses compete with each other on this battlefield (rather than devastating their home or previously conquered worlds). I’m thinking this is as a fantasy version of Civilization where each house tries to dominate the world through their preferred means. Something the Empire calls The Great Game. Once someone has ‘won’, the Emperor declares them the dominant house for that world and everyone prepares for the next invasion.
This campaign would be set on Toril about 1495 DR.
Prologue:
PC’s would be in Westgate or some other city when the invasion hits. The city comes under attack and for the first few missions the PC’s are just trying to get out of the city alive, maybe leading a few civilians or friends.
Chapter 1:
PC’s meet up with an established group and run through some missions to help protect civilians or strike invading draconic forces in support of a major land army (thinking maybe Purple Dragons of Cormyr).
Chapter 2:
The initial push of each dragon house is over and they are consolidating gains all over Toril. At this point the PC’s are given some options of which faction they may want to assist. Maybe they choose to help one dragon house or another to win The Great Game. “Hey we’re ruled by a dragon but it’s a good silver dragon that is pretty benevolent, or an amethyst dragon that’s going to mainly leave us alone.” Or maybe they choose to help a rebel group that seeks to carve out a dragon free zone. There might even be a way to wipe out the dragons or undo the invasion entirely.
Beyond that I’m not quite sure where the plot will go yet (one reason I’m asking for input).
Main mechanics I want to explore:
I want to really dive into a lot of the new options in Fizban’s including the draconic feats and blessings as well as horde magic items. Playing into the player desire to hunt more dragons to gain more rewards and power.
Second I want to try out a semi-sandbox hex crawl where the PC’s can move about that giant map and their actions will influence how houses and native factions expand and contract over the map.
The plot so far is pretty thin but I’m thinking of a game that’s more Skyrim and less Mass Effect; so very broad but not very deep. I’m not going to be able to prep as much way ahead of time (as I usually do) but I think the back and forth, reacting to the party’s desires should be fun.
I think I can lay in plot elements but make them more centric to the PC’s and NPC’s they find rather than a grand story that starts at A and goes to Z.
What do you think? Is that something you’d want to play? See any big problems? Suggestions to make it fun?

It really hit when I found this picture online: https://i.ibb.co/dgYvsZ7/Faerun-Map-Redone-Roll-20-Res-Hexes.jpg
