Hello everyone, I am an optimizer. Because of this, I almost always choose variant human as my race in almost all of my campaigns (the feat LVL 1 is just soooooooooo good!).
This is where you guys all come in! I would like some assistance in selecting the race of the character for my next campaign. I have made a poll above of races I wouldn't be opposed to playing and removed the races that can get feats (I know crazy, right? I'm wincing just thinking about it :P).
Everyone will only get one vote. I might have a follow-up poll if I feel some of the top results were close.
Remember, this is no longer about optimization, but simply choosing a race concept that you want me to play and please be sure to drop a comment so we can keep this thread in circulation!
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
What it the class you're looking at playing? I generally pick my class first, then choose a fun race to go with it.
I'm going to select the class based on the result of the race. I don't want to have people feel limited by a class I want to play. Doing it this way may even encourage me to play a class I typically wouldn't consider.
Perhaps the roles/class other players want to cover will interfere with what I choose. I guess I'll have to solve that problem when the time comes.

I can see where you're coming from, and it makes sense. It's just that all the races have strong roleplay potential. It's kind of like asking whether you should by a Ford Fiesta or a Ford pickup. Both are great at what they do, but without having an idea of what it's going to be used for...you can't really argue for one over another. Maybe you could tell us a little about the campaign setting, or what kind of character you want to play (in personality, style or whatever). Something that will help us match it up to suit you. Otherwise, you're just going to get answers that are random - you could just assign them numbers from 1-19 as listed there, roll a d20 (with 20 being reroll) and you'll get the same effect but quicker.
It's upto you, though. Just some thoughts from me on why I feel I can't help at the moment.

Since the races aren't in alphabetical order, I'm assuming that it is a subconscious preference order on your behalf.
Therefore the first answer is the correct one.
I had entered them in the order they appeared on the race page in dndbeyond. The only one out of order is tabaxi because I had grouped it with leonin just in case people weren't paying close enough attention to the options.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
What is the setting info? Is it going to be a sea campaign, or a desert campaign or something else? To me I generally look at setting material and starting location as guides to what I could play because a centaur maybe problematic in a mountain or underground setting. Are there any setting limitations about race, ie all/most halflings are in the food industry and you do not want to RP that background. Note I am not saying that a race has to be locked into a segment but often there are descriptions about what races do or segments they fill in a setting. For example maybe Centaurs are vegetarian but are herders and animal handlers as they are good at it for some reason if in the setting they get animal handling skill as well as advantage on medicine rolls dealing with animals.
Also what is your gaming group like? Is there a problem playing specific races or does the group like to play specific races? Like last game there was a very annoying NPC of a specific race and everyone cringes remembering that NPC.
If you are looking for something more challenging tp RP then go a race that has some drawbacks to what your and your group normally do. For example Centaurs being 4 legged would have trouble doing somethings such as scaling unless they had stronger ropes and other equipment.
Halflings are always the best. Halflings and gnomes. It makes me feel better about my height.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I was going to vote for Lizardfolk since it's your profile pic, but it isn't even on the list
The lizardfolk profile pic was because I figured the race most closely resembled a dinosaur (my username is Tyrannosary). Yes, I had excluded it from the list but that was half for the sake of narrowing it down to a smaller number of races and half because it's a monster and I didn't really want to play as a monster for my race.

The setting is a typical basic fantasy world. Any of these races on the list would have no problem having a way to be incorporated into the world.
It's a great gaming group and we don't have any problems with anything. It's more of just "known" in the group that I'm an optimizer. It feels as though people can't help but roll their eyes when they hear about me playing... you guessed it... another variant human lol.
Yeah, I didn't want the race of the character I'll be playing to be a monster. Those pack tactics certainly would've been sweet! (whoops there I go optimizing again :P)

What makes lizardfolk "monsters" as compared to, say, dragonborn, leonin/tabaxi or aarakocra?

No context? Alright, Centaur it is then.

I went with Genasi because it’s something that still gives you 4 sub-races to pick from and it’s not a commonly played race.

Make them a bard so they can be the centaur of attention.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
What makes lizardfolk "monsters" as compared to, say, dragonborn, leonin/tabaxi or aarakocra?

LMAOOOOOOO, this deserves an upvote
Good question, dragonborn don't really have a monster stat block and aarakocra do but they align with being good.
Leonin and Tabaxi could certainly be considered monsters, but at least they don't have the lack of emotions and "an alien inscrutable mindset"
