So i was looking around my old and new books and realized, the old crappy undying has some interesting synergy with some newer content.
So i am working on the name but i am in rough draft of a young man cursed between life and death, essentially he came into contact with a mass of negative energy which altered his body (like radiation) and now he has lived struggling to keep a normal life and to accept himself for whatever he is now.
He is a reborn 6th level undying warlock with pact of the chain and "Gift of the Ever-Living Ones" with his stats mainly focused on con and charisma with some into dex and the rest spread out.
So onto the mechanics of the gimick i have which i can't wait to see the parties reaction to when it happens which should open for some fun roleplaying! (btw party thinks he is just normal human who is something like a sorcerer.
1: So the undying get a feature at level 6 (if you stabilize an ally or succeed on a death saving throw you regain 1d8+con life)
2: Reborn get advantage on death saving throws
3: Pact of the chain "Gift of the Ever-Living Ones" (when you roll dice to heal and you familiar is within 100ft, treat the roll as the max number)
This by no means makes him powerful or unkillable, but does create the illusion of being unkillable and I will flavor as his body using negative energy to mend his major wounds.
I plan to build him as a supportive character who uses dispell magic, counter spell, and summons with debuffs to assist allies making them better while using eldritch blast for attacks flavored as compressed negative energy.
Was also thinking of taking the "Undying Servitude" Invocation because 1) thematically could be cool 2) would make a great way to help melee units flank or create meat walls for the soft boys in the back 3) if he looses control of them they will pose little threat to him because of his 1st level feature with undying!
Anyways story wise i was debating on making him more of a humble grave tender that cared for the dead before burial.
Any opinions on this? maybe some cool ideas i could do to add some fun mechanics?
Sounds like a fun character to play. That's the important thing. I think you've got a cool concept and are using the right combination of abilities for it.
Mechanically, by the time you're 6th level death saving throws become pretty rare. Usually either a party member will bring you right back up with a healing word, or the DM will hit your character a couple more when they're down and kill them outright before you get to roll, and getting knocked down gets less and likely likely as the party gain a plethora of defensive abilities. So this feature may not pop up for a while, and won't be likely to be a regular thing.
Thanks for the heads up, making it rare could make it more impactful actually! Also i realized i can make a crawling claw from a description in crawling claws to use as a companion!
it specifically mentioned necromancers often raise a hand instead of a ritual and use them as assistance and stuff. So having like 3-4 in a bag to use for scouting and what not could be cool like pets! Rather than as a maliciously evil thing.
i am thinking of having him wear tattered clothes with earthy colors and a wood carved mask which would give an almost unintended scarecrow apearance!
I suck at drawing really, I am thinking of using the my profile picture which i haven't been able to use for a character yet! It's essentially a photo i edited and blended a picture of a titan from attack on titan for the left eye and cheek.
Then as for the outfit i am using hero forge, can't afford to commission him and nobody in my group is able to draw very well so we all kinda use other means.

That actually sounds really cool, are you going to have someone else draw it, or do you do it yourself?
And...?

This is what i have so far, for the concept design

Dang I really like that. He looks like a grim reaper all-most.
And...?
Yeah, i kinda wish they had a smoother mask that was less skull but i managed to make it look good lol
