I wanted to create a custom magic item (a shield) that can also be thrown (yes, very Captain America) for a ranged attack. I created a custom magic item with a basic shield as the base item. I then added a modifier of Ranged Weapon Attack - Bludgeoning for 1d6 damage.
When I add the item to my character sheet (and equip it), I do not get this ranged attack listed under my actions list. Am I doing this wrong? Is there a way to do what I'd like or is it impossible?
Note: I also tried something similar with an axe that had both a melee and ranged attack. I could not figure out a way to add the ranged attack to the base axe and have it show up on the actions area.
There isn't a way to add actions to items yet (this should be getting worked on soon, since there are plenty on official items that add actions).
In the meantime, you can just make a shield with the details of the attack on the description. Or you can use a boomerang as the base weapon, call it a shield, give it a +2 AC mod, and deal with the fact that the caracter sheet doesn't treat it as a sheild.
Thanks guys. This is what it appeared was going on. I thought of those workarounds, but neither really gets me what I want, which is to add custom actions to an item. Hopefully they add that soon.
Yep, I've done that too. Unfortunately I'm also trying to create items for the others in my campaign who are less tech savvy. Since I can't edit their sheets directly it would be much easier if I could attach the actions to the items, and they could just equip the item. Thanks for the suggestion though.
It's this kind of keen, insightful comment they killed the thread necromancy rules for. Exactly this sort of informative and enriching post that can absolutely resurrect a dead conversation nobody cares about anymore. Bravo, Namako. Bravo.
Concerning this problem, I've honestly overestimated the generic feature system by virtue of its misleading name. But I think this is just a symptom of how the system has grown (read as "spaghetti code")

Here's what I did:
Start with a Shield +1.
Change "BASE ITEM TYPE" to "WEAPON"
Change "BASE WEAPON" to something (I chose dart since it's close to the top).
Click "SAVE CHANGES" (Sorry, I had to redo all these steps like 5 times because I'm an idiot and didn't actually save anything)
This allows you to have the correct modifier for a shield, but also have a range attack. Play around with the modifier to your needs. Hope this helps.

You can create a custom attack on the character sheet to remind yourself of the ability.
