What does the One D&D Announcement mean for D&D as a whole? Which of the preexisting 5e books will still be in effect, and which will become void? And what's the whole idea behind it anyway?
From what we've seen so far, the only things that won't work in 1D&D will be the core rules. Spell lists may also be changed and there might be a few tweaks to abilities (eg I think it's Grave Clerics who get to cancel critical hits on allies...that will have to be altered to work with the new critical hit mechanics where monsters don't crit), but by and large, things will work. The things I'd think carefully before buying at the moment is the PHB, MM and DMG.

Do we know yet if DNDBeyond will be revamped for 1D&D? If we have digital 5e books and characters here, will they continue to work? Will we be able create new 5e characters still? I haven’t had a chance to read everything about 1D&D yet but from the bits I’ve heard here and there, I might want to stick with 5e.

So, we don't know if they'll revamp 5e, but given the new edition, new owners and everything, I imagine they will. Go on with a splash and all that.
Everything else, if VGtF and MToF were anything to go by, yes, you'll be able to create characters etc. However, they' might be legacy content. I imagine the PHB, MM and DMG will almost certainly be unpurchasable once 1D&D releases. Supplement books? Probably fine. Adventures will almost certainly be fine.

So far the rules they've released have been mostly backwards compatible with existing material. You may need to slightly adapt old races not to include ASIs since those have been moved over to backgrounds, but other than that and a few core rules, old books are still perfectly usable.
There are explanations for how to test the current Codename: 1D&D UA character creation samples with 5e.
I seem to remember reading that DDB will beta test tools for Codename: 1D&D rules eventually but not soon.
If it's backwards compatible, I suspect (as in blind guess) there will be options on the starting pages to choose which rules to use like they already do for optional rules presented by later, more recent sourcebooks and, if you had them prior to MMotM, like they do with legacy stuff during character creation.
For all we know, it could be a toggle that defaults to Codename: 1D&D rules versus 5e on the starting pages. (I don't envy the developers on all of this. They might be privy to more info in preparation, but backwards compatibility can be a nightmare for development if they want to make a significant change to anything.)

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
basically, nothing is changing at this time unless you join the playtesting - where the new rules are not supported by DDB. Think of all the 1D&D stuff as unearthed Arcana that you can experiment with if you want or leave alone if you don't. Over the next year as their ideas are play tested and reported on they will be firming up what actually makes it into 1D&D but nothing is set in stone right now and nothing is implemented in DDB. If you are going to use the playtest materials you are either going to have to go back to paper and pen or create some significant homebrew pieces here in DDB for you and your players to use. If you are a player and not a DM I wouldn't worry about it for now, As a DM I want to see more than just the races and backgrounds from the PDF before I start playtesting any of it. At the very least I want to see at least 1 subclass from at least 5 classes to see how it integrates together and how the new versions compare to the old.
