I had a player who wanted to use a sickle as a weapon (Warlock). He had it in his inventory, equipped it and the bonus didn't look right. We added a dagger as well and the bonus (both hit and damage) show up as what we thought would be correct. He is proficient in both weapons.
Is there something we're missing in regards to the sickle as a weapon?
I recreated a simple version of his character to try it out again and get the same results. What are we missing?
Dagger is a finesse weapon, sickle is not. So with a -1 strength mod, you got that +1 there while the dagger takes advantage of a the dexterity + proficiency.
I could see in this case while in regular tool usage a sickle would be a regular strength weapon, reflecting that people who use it as a weapon are most likely adapting their tool usage technique to melee (one does not reap grain deftly, but it's more a matter of brute force), it's possible for your warlock to make the case that the sickle could be adapted as a finesse weapon by those who've studied the properties in conjunction with other implements of combat rending and slashing. I don't know if it would fit reality of how real sickles work, but you could home-brew a concept of a fighting sickle to get the flavor you're going for.
I have a sickle wielding cleric at my table. Never noticed of course they weren't build to lead combat so the bonuses probably even out with it.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
Super late to post but remember you could “reskin” the dagger as a curved blade and sickle-like in appearance. I do this so long as it’s discussed and not a veiled attempt at game breaking.

Ah! That's it, thanks so much. We did not catch that. Greatly appreciated.
